Topic: Take a look please (Page 1 of 1)

I'm not one of those fathers that show off ugly baby pictures, BUT I would like some input on the site I am in the process of making for displaying him to (ok I am, so sue me) our family. I would like input form the 56kers too, does it load ok? To much? Any tips for optimizing? Thanks in advance.

wilmonkey: Very nicely done - I like the crayon theme. Some thoughts:

1. Fill in the title tag. I suppose its not so important that it has keyword and description metatags but give it a go (it can't hurt).

2. I'd throw in a splash of CSS to control the text.

3. I'm sure he won't thank you in later life for describing him as a porker on his first web page!!

4. Wow - that surely can't just be for his benefit now can it!!:

5. I wouldn't open the 'raw' jpeg from the thumbnail I'd have it on its own page with forwards and backwards buttons.

6. I'm not sure about the top of the left column - it might look better if it just went seamlessly into the top bar.

Overall it looks good and works well - I'm sure the little fella will thank you for it when he grows up (apart from the bit about being a porker!!) - make sure you archive it or something.

I am a 56k'er and it downloaded fine.

Hi wilmonkey! I don't think we have met. Here are just a few things that I found.

On the front page where you have 19 1/2 inches long, use the html character for that instead. It will display weird on some machines if you don't. That and it's just bad ju-ju.

I agree with Emps on getting rid of the font tags and moving all that to CSS.

I don't think that I like the left corner of the page. It's not his picture there is just a seam there that is really distracting. I would put that picture somewhere different and then make that title bar and menu seamless like Emps suggested. Maybe put the pic over top of the Date stuff. You know what, if you moved it there or somewhere else it would be real easy to update that picture as he grows up. Just a thought.

On the gallery page you may want to maybe think about laying them out with some type of border around them or something. Something subtle and not too overbearing. And again just like Emps said, have the pictures open into a new window maybe? Something that has a set background over and the picture is in the middle of the window.??. . .

Looks like a good start though. I like the Crayon with his name on it.

Thanks for the advice guys. As always it is a work in progress. I have no idea about css (I havn't touched website design in oh, about 5 years. So most of the stuff I know is from HTML 2.0 )
anyone recomend some reading material?

Check out this site for CSS1 and CSS2 stuff.

I'd just check out the stuff on Fonts as that is really all you need it for right now. If you need any help along the way we have a forum for that as well.
