Hello all,

I'm new here. I'm working on my portfolio site. It still needs some work, but I would like to start getting some feedback on how it could be improved. Let me know what you think.

Thanx ahead of time,
heed

Ok lets see. for a site on Geocities you took time and you know what you doing. From first look at just your site it great. But there are a couple of things.

1. Try and make you site have a universal color scheme. You splash is a white bg and in your sight you have yellow orange.

2. Replace your FONT tags with P tags.
This way you can use more Css and the more CSS the better.

that's all i see wrong and this time if i sound sort of harsh im not trying to be and im sorry if i do.

Patrick,

You're not being to harsh, that's what I posted here for...help. I apreciate it. I agree about the css. I haven't had time to work on it as of yet, but the color scheme I changed slightly. I still haven't had a chance to tweek the splash either.

Check out the changes and let me know if it's working.

That ges for everyone. The more feedback I can get the better.

thanx ahead of time,

1. Again I don't see the need for a splash page - your message is slightly off center (in Op6) and there seems to be a lot of space under it which could be removed.

2. I'll hand out my IFRAME warning here - it degrades very badly indeed in NS4.x. I don't see any reason for there use here and I'd go with DIVs with overflow:auto to get that scrolling effect.

3. I like the use of colours and the look you are going for but I'd probably like to see the technological theme extended into the rest of the page. At the moment they look like discrete elements mainly grouped at the top and it might work better if you added more graphical touches lower down and worked the content into the theme some how. I like the title graphics which look like flat keyboard buttons but they don't really fit the theme (as they currently are anyway). The main navigation buttons also don't look quite right (although I can't quite put my finger on it).

4. I wonder about the inclusion of the Flash on your main page - it weighs it down without adding to the effect and they may be better off in your portfolio.

5. The boxes on your skills page look odd in Opera (missing borders and varying widths) so you might want to look at them.

Overall I like the colours and I like the look I suppose what I want is more of it!! Try and make the page feel like a consistent whole with each element looking like it belongs where it is and working to enhance the whole feel (hmmm this is now the second review on the run where I've gone into such 'vague' concepts I hope it makes some sense!!). There are a few issues like iframes but overall it is looking good.

This is also up for review here:

Thanks Emps,

Your not to vague, the more input I get the closer it gets to how I want it. One question though, how do I get the scrolling effect with DIV:auto flow? Could you post a piece of how the code would look so I colud work that out? I just like the look of IFrames.

I'm going to try and work some of the graphical content onto the left hand side of the pages. I'll also try and frame up the content areas somehow with some graphics.

Thanx again, and I'll be back when I make some of these changes.

heed: I can't think of an example off the top of my head (although Jeni was using it in the page she was working on and that is up for review here). If you set the height to something then if the page is longer the scrollbars appear (and of course if you wanted the effect to work sideways then you'd set the width). It breaks in Opera and degrades well in NS4.x but its better than not appearing!! In compliant browsers it looks the smae as IFRAMEs. If you need more explanation

I gotta be honest with you... I hate the buttons. The text doesn't contrast well against the gradient.

I like some of the fonts you used on there... reminds me of a periodic table.

I think i'm going to reiterate what someone else said on here (i think)... you have a technical machine theme goin' on, build on it. in some parts you have it going, in others you kind of have a modern curvy-thinng in its place. I think that's the hardest part about web design... consistant look and feel.

Emps,
I'll check out jenis site and see if I can figure that out.

fallacy,
nobody likes my buttons. It's the first thing I did. They'll be changed eventually, but I wnat to get the rest of the site consistent. And, I agree the hardest part about this is making the continuity work, but then agin that's half the fun.
And, I'm not sure what you mean about having a curvy thing, could you be more specific.

Thankx again for your input,
heed

My view point:

There are many mis-placed images which seem manly in my oppinion to be your biggest problem. Such as the image to the left below resources. It's a good image, and a nice idea, but it leads to nothing, as the images background is rough- gradient, and the whole left site being a solid one tone color, also, don't mind me saying, but i think you can do a bit better on the screws, they kind of bring down the whole image. Another image is the logo, white background comming from no where. And so on.

Another thing, which isn't so much bad, but kind of irritating, is the colors. So many bright colors. A good example of what many seem to be suggesting, and also using unorthadox colors for realistic objects is http://www.eyeball-design.com/ .

benev,
thanks for the input, I'll try to work out some of those issues. I've also added some borders to the tables on my skills page. The logo will get changed eventually, and I'm still going to try and tie the the graphics together throughout the page.

thanx again,
heed
