Twilight Muse

It's a tad image heavy for such a small site but eh..

Good? Bad? Ugly?

Edit: URL fix =)

Well, if I have to choose one of the three, I would say "good." But if I had a little more freedom I would say "Wow." I know this is the site reviews forum, but I can't think of much to say, other than "Wow. That is some fine work. I'm almost embarassed to be here, it's that fine."

The art seems to be a very good representation of the music, but perhaps that's because I saw the two together? I wonder what would have struck me if I had heard the music first... I'd have to say I agree with timelessness. The picture that comes into my head is one of an attic filled with assorted things: furniture with dust covers draped over them, old standing mirrors, maybe even an old bicycle, and a doll with glassy eyes that is really freaking me out right about now. And all of this is bathed in pillars of soft light coming in through a dusty window.

OK, I think I need to go someplace else now. Very good work, though. I enjoyed it immensely.

Very cool, tho if you wanted to add some more content, the three image links are in perfect position for a game of Simon. . .

If I had one complaint to make it would be that those bums who pedal DSL should get off their lazy asses so I don't have to suffer over a 56k connection just because I live too far from a hub. But other than that, this is one of the better online graphic presentations I've seen. Awesome work man. If you're stuck on what content to add, I'd stick a little blurb in for each image describing the process.

Dracusis: Stunning - great concept and perfect execution. All the elements work together so nicely and its great to hear a Flash movie that doesn't have some kind of techno soundtrack. I'm not sure what other comments you are looking for - I presume this is part of the assignment you mentioned and if so its probably a little late for change. My only minor gripe is that I would have liked to see some way for the images to be integrated into the main section rather than being popped into another window. Possibly a compromise might have been to create a simple green line fram around the picture and as fallen said (hi fallen nice to see you back - we thought we'd lost you for a while there) you could then provide a little extra info - inspiration, how you felt, if you are happy with the result, a few tips on how you did it - that kind of thing.

Being on cable I don't know about the bandwidth issues so you might want to bear that in mind.

PS - whats the font?

Overall - really nice work.

Thanks for all the comments.

Yah, I was aware of the bandwidth issues. I'm on dialup too. =( Displaying 3 800x600 images along with 5:00+ min's of audio and it get's a little hard to aviod them. I could have cut down the images for the interface but their not really that big. The real killer here is the 1.5mb flash file. The flash is only used for the audio, nothing else. If a user is still loading this file and they try to view on of the main 800x600 images both will slow down to a crawl.

I have no idea how I'd get around that though. I've tried passing Javascript commants to pause the flash movie if the main images are loading but even if a flash movie is paused/stoped it will continue to download the rest of the file. I ~could~ break up the flash into little chunks and tie them togther with Javascript but that just wouldn't be worth the headache.

If anyone has any ideas how I could get around this bottleneck (That of both the flash and an 800x600 image being pulled at the same time) then I'm all ears.

Darn! The loading screen is broke!... Well, I think it is... Anyway, I'm not happy with the way it's coded so I'm doing re-doing that bit at the moment.

I also see what you mean about the images in pop-ups... I would have put them in in-line DIV's but I really didn't have enough time to code that, but since I'm re-doing the loading bit now I may as well change how I display the images too. Yeah, this whole site and the images was an assignment, the due date has come and gone by about 12 hours now but If I don't polish this off now I know I'll never get back to it -- regardless of how well being my intentions are.

"just the music is making me crazy because i have to stop winamp always" Yah, I know people don't like music on websites but I couldn't get around this one. Besides, you don't ~have~ to switch it on...

Again, thanks for all the kind words and stuff. I'm glad you all liked it. Oh and it's good to see you back round these parts Fallen.

** Updates **

Twilight Muse

- Fixed the loading screen and made it look a little better.
- Added a progress Bar to the Loading Screen
- Changed the browser requirments to version 5+ browsers (Oprea 6)
- Added a stripped down non spec HTML 4.0 version for NN4 and Opera 5. - Browsers get re-directed automagically.
- Re-Compressed the music. I got it down under 400k! Which is pretty good to 5+ mins.
- Fixed the audio control so Mozilla and Opera users can now play the music.
- Fixed a Box Model Bug for Moailla.
- Fixed a menu bug where one of the main options would stay highlighted after a pop-up was viewed
- Fixed a menu bug for Opera where the options would become indefinatly highlighted or disabled.
- Snipped off another 30k or so by compressing the images again.

I'm still having display issues though. I can't seem to figure out why oprea is buggering up the witdh of the content divisions for the 'verbiage' and 'copyright' sections.

I'm also geting a scroll bar in IE and Mozilla when there isn't enough content to justify it being there. I'm not too worried about this one but the only browser to get it right is Opera 6... go figure.

I've also left the main images being displayed in pop-up windows. I was thinkihng about displaying them with in-line DIV's but that would push the required resolution to 1024x768 and I didn't want to do that. Waht are your thoughts on this.. Better to go with a cleaner display method and min 1024 screen res or should I just leave it the way it is?

If you run into any problems please let me know. I'd love for someone to Mac test it but I can do this myself on Monday. I'd also like to hear from other dial-up users. I hope the loading times aren't tooo long.

Anyways, a big thanks to everyone who's commented so far.

Um, I'm not sure if this was a problem in the first version, but there seems to be a blank black box to the left of "verbiage," like an image is missing.

Yeah, I just noticed that.

That's the flash bit. Don't know what heppend there, I just uploaded the .swf file again and all seems fine now. Oh yah, you should be able to stream the audio now too.

Hmm... interesting. I still see the black box. I'm using IE 6, if that helps. Does anyone else see it?

Suho, Try refreshing the page a couple of times. Your browser is probably cacheing (is that how you add an 'ing' to that word or do you drop the e?) it.

Hmm... I hope it's just a cache problem. I've never dealt with audio stuff (or flash stuff) before so I could be screwing something up.
