Even on broadband, you're used to seeing [b]something[/b] moving when things are loading, and it was a bit disorienting. How about making your text sizes relative? I don't think the text is too small as it is, but with the relatively low contrast, it is pretty much at the threshhold of what I would consider comfortable reading. Why don't you give the reader control over the text sizes, just in case someone comes in with not-so-great eyesight? I like the design, and I don't really mind the orange. I think it's a nice splash of color in an otherwise colorless page, making it that much more effective. Good job all around.
