I don't know whether a prototype belongs here or in the DHTML Forum. Mebbe a Mad Sci. can move it if they think it's in the wrong place - thanks.

I've been trying to work out a diferent paradigm to replace the traditional "logo at the top - menu at the side or top" offerings, partly because I wanted to show off a bit, partly because my Javascript skills were getting rusty, and partly because I used to love all the moving stuff on my hero Doc's Ozones.com site. I'm sure all this has been done before, but i can't remember seeing a web site which does it, and I thought it all up myself, so I'm claiming it as an original (poohhh .. can you smell that ??).

I'm pretty happy with progress so far, but that's nothing, because it's the only thing i've been thinking about for quite a while, so my views are biased by my elation at the little successes along the way. Anyway ... I think I'm now finally ready for the inevitable comedown ... and I always appreciate the comments of such a knowledgeable bunch of guru's as the inmates ... so here goes nothing ...

What do you think

(all comments should be written on $50 bills and mailed to .... well it was worth a try

Well I like it. Don't think I've seen anything quite like it. Bravo! My only observations: It's a bit bumpy on the move...could be smoother but that may have more to do with my connection than anything else...and the red scrollers are just a bit hard to see. And yes I agree with you, I like it when things move around a bit. It does of course all depend on the site...and on yours it works... imo. My opinion and $20 will get you a coffee almost anywhere. <lol>

Trib, original is definately right

Its a bit clunky on moving but i really like the way ya have it working (ie the idea behind it), although there is quite a bit of stuff going on it isnt too busy its still got a clean look to it.

Some of the area logo that drop in on the subject title holder (for example portfolio) are not so sharp.

Also maybe try loading the content after the movement is complete, for me on ie 5 on win2k at 1280x1024 that is what appears to be making it stutter, scroll bars are appearing as the content moves and resizes and text appears in it, try like i said adding content to holder after you have readjusted the position.

Nice, very similar to youngpup's site.

"so I'm claiming it as an original " - > Sorry bud, there are a lot of flash sites that do this. Although it's a nice testiment to DHTML to see it done wihtout flash. Good show. =)

The animation is pertty chunky in Mozilla but that's to be expected. It's a mess in Opera. Doesn't work at all

Although I'd like to see some cleaner images in there. The ones your using are rather messy and at points don't line up very well. I think the choice of colours could be better too, the blue in the background it too strong for my tastes.

That's some pertty sweet code though, well done.

Thanks to everyone for their comments, both here and on the Gurus Network. I think I've got one to stick with. Yep, it needs more development.

I think I'll try emptying the frames before moving the doo-dad, and then setting a timeout on the loading of the new contents. That should give it time to move before the widgets appear, and smoother motion by drastically cutting re-rendering requirements. I, realise the graphics are pretty shitty, but that's not my strong point. One of my biggest faults is that I'm too impatient to get something up on screen so that I can start coding. Now I have something coded, I definitely need to get down and start working hard on the graphics. I'm afraid the blue will be staying (it's a long story) but in the light of Drac's comments, maybe I need to work though the colouring of the other elements to try and lighten it up a bit.

Yep, DHTML is a bit cranky, but I love it.

I think I'll be taking the site down again after the wweekend while I work on it. When I'm done I'll put fully documented (well .... documented) code in the JS directory.
