Recently I reviewed a site in stream-of-consciousness styel. I'm not sure exactly why I did it, but it was a very interesting experience for me. My reviews are usually very well-ordered, with nice, neat lists of areas I think need improvement. I'm sure this method is probably the most helpful in pointing out trouble spots, but I like the SOC method because it reveals what I'm thinking when I actually see the site, and might offer more insight on an actual user experience. It also happens to reveal the fact that I can sometimes be a drama queen, but you've got to make sacrifices, right? So, without further ado, my SOC review: _________________________________ Gee... this sure is taking forever to load... man those text graphics are ugly... why on earth would you save those as jpegs? Horizontal scrollbars make Baby Jesus cry... Wow, the graphics finally loaded... whoa... that is huge... Ah, so that's what those blanks spaces are for... the rollovers... huh? This doesn't seem to be working properly. Why is it that when I mouse over one of the menu items it tries to load something, but then nothing appears? And then the glow effect doesn't seem to go away when I mouse out, or even when I mouse over something else. Not to mention the fact that it's just plain ugly. I could've sworn I saw a picture appear in the blank space on the left... yep, it's trying to load ABOUT.jpg, but nothing is coming up, weird. And extremely annoying. Heh, I got all four menu items to glow at once... it's like a little game. Oh, there's another picture. No, now it's gone. What the heck was that? And why are the glows different colors? The ones on the left seem to be blue, while the ones on the right seem to be purplish... OK, enough playing with the menu... let's check out the content. Gah! That screen background is going to give me conniptions! Ow, ow, someone turn it off, please. And the text color... why? Dear God, why? And it's so small... let's make it bigger... ah, that's better. At least I can change the text size... but if I make it too big then it overflows onto the seats... OK, well, let's click on "About." Ah, black background, blue/purple text... looks familiar... oh, wait, no, there's that horrid background again. It would have been so much nicer against plain black... and now the text runs over onto the film, since I made it bigger... hmm... but I don't like the smaller text. What is that, Times New Roman? And where is the line spacing? Georgia at the same size and with some decent line-spacing would be fine, but not this... nope, got to make it bigger. I've got no choice. Well hey, this kind of sucks... I thought I'd look at the source, but it just pops up the page... must be because it's ftp... lame. I'm still pretty sure that's Times New Roman... And why is the text centered... my, that is ridiculously hard to read. It would be so much nicer ragged right, and with an unordered list instead of those silly asterisks with no spacing... OK, next... SSFX... um, huh? Isn't this the front page? Why does a link called SSFX take me back to the front page? Shouldn't it be called home or something? And shouldn't the link be disabled on the front page... nothing like clicking on a link that takes you to the page you're on to screw up your sense of web direction. And why is the SSFX menu item the second one... it would seem to make more sense being the first one... Alright, moving on to "Work." Holy miniscule text, Batman! I can barely read this sitting right in front of my monitor! Make it bigger... overflows, of course, but oh well... huh, what's this? What's going on with these pics? They're... repeating? Not only that, but the background image repeats as well... this is a visual fiasco... (screen cap, 130k) More centered text... I really just don't feel like reading more than a few lines... "Click here"??? What year is this? *checks calendar* Yup, still 2003... for a moment there I could've sworn I was back in the early 90s... "click here"? wonderful... I scan down to find the links, which thankfully stand out nicely from the text, but all I see are three "here"s... doesn't really make me want to click on anything... moving on. "Contact"... well this is standard fare... except that I don't get that ugly guassian background image, I get the curtains, which makes the text slightly harder to read. And why is the link blue instead of white? Hmm... maybe I should go back and look at some of those "here"s... doesn't seem to be much left... Why do the menu graphics sometimes disappear when I click on one of them? Weird... OK, clicking on the first "here," even though I don't know where it goes... wow, the surrounding text shrinks back down when I click... Plugin Error: "The data that the plugin requested, did not download." Thank you for, that information. So now I've got some more of that hideously centered text (it is really starting to aggravate me), and a picture on the right... the progress bar is slowly creeping across the bottom, but I don't think anything is loading. What plugin, anyway? Did some say something about a plugin? I don't remember reading anything like that. I'm pretty sure I have the latest plugins installed. Ah, screw it. Let's try one more... the second "here." None of the images seem to be caching. I wonder if that's because of the ftp... at any rate, it makes for a very unpleasant browsing experience. OK, second "here." More shrinking text... wow, what the heck? Now I've got a narrow column of justified text with no space between it and the pictures on the left and right... I can't figure out which was more difficult to read... this or the centered text. Just look at those rivers of whitespace flowing through the text. Funky mouseovers again... this is just too painful. I have no idea what is going on, and I really don't want to subject myself to this text. Time to go. _________________________________ Yup, that's it. I realize that SOC reviews tend to come out a bit harsher, because I'm not "filtering" my thoughts as much (to say I'm not filtering them at all would be lying... that's just impossible), but I think it's more honest. Don't take any of it personally, anyway. :) www.liminality.org
