This is not exactly a site review, per se, but I couldn't think of anywhere else to put it. I think it is most appropriate to this forum. Anyway, some of you may remember my site--it was in here a while ago for reviews. It has been up and running for several months now, but I'd appreciate it if I could get a few people to look at it again. I'll tell you what I'm looking for after you look at it--it's important that you look at the site first. So, please click on the link first and then come back and read the rest of this post. This paragraph is for people who may have been reading too quickly and thus had difficulty slowing down or stopping. This is one of the dangers of speed-reading. In fact, there have been studies that show speed-reading is the second leading killer of web geeks around the world, right after massive trauma resulting from muscle atrophy. So, for your own safety, please get a little exercise, and read a little more slowly. Thank you. OK, back to the story. There is a link on the front page, right below the menu. Yes, the site updates link. How many of you saw it? Of those who saw it, did you feel any urge whatsoever to click on it? In the past week, my front page has seen 86 hits. The site updates page, however, got no hits (well, it got one after I told someone about it). This dismays me a great deal. The journal entries on the front page are, of course, very important, and it is the most frequently updated part of the site. But the other parts get updated occasionally as well, and I wanted to provide the site updates page as a quick way to access that information. But if no one is clicking on the link, then it is likely that no one will know, for example, that I finally put up my translation of Kim Young-ha's 'Christmas Carol'--something I am quite proud of, despite the fact that it is a constant reminder of failure. So, what I want to know is this: is there any way I can make the site updates link more conspicuous (ie, make people want to click on it more) without making it sing and dance? A devoted fan of mine has suggested two options: moving the link up to the menu, or making the site updates the front page. The first might not be a bad idea, but it would also mean that the menu would wrap to a second line in 800x600 (minor, but annoying). The second is something I have considered, but I can't help feeling that that would be like walking into a restaurant through the kitchen (it took me a while to perfect that analogy). So, what do the great minds of the Asylum think? I would have thought that having a single link sitting there by itself would have been enough, but apparently it's not. Or is just that nobody but me really cares about the other parts of the site? Hopefully that's not the case. Any and all ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
