Topic: Impact design ... redesigned

Hi everybody! I'm new here so I thought I'd start by submitting my recently redesigned site to review.
Any feedback / comments would be apprecialted.

Well it certainly looks very nice, but I'm confused -- is it a web site for a design company or a design portal for web developers?

Your question is legitimate, it started as a simple company site and somewhere along the way it switched to what it is today - a design resources site.
I left the info buttons and the portfolio for those interested in collaborating with us and because I got many messages with requests for info and quotes.
But the main purpose is to be a helpful resource community for designers (though the forums are not very active, our visitors are mostly interested in the tutorials section.

Arr I see, that makes more sence.

Although upon a second look, I did notice a slight missalignment from the hearder/menu to the rest of the sight in IE6. And the mouseover highlights for the menu aren't actually clickable unless the mouse is over the text -- easily fixed with a display:block decleration.

The type also feels a little cramped in places, but appart from that I think it's great. Nice work with the perspective in the header image btw, I really liked the way you worked that in.

That's a strange thing, the whole site is based on a fixed centered background. I've tested it on 800x600, 1024x769 and 1600x1200. The funny thing is that on one computer it alignes well but on other computer at the same resolution there is this 1 pixel deviation. I've broken my head trying to figure out why but.... no use. Any suggestions?

Hmm... you should also do a bit of cross-browser testing,

In Netscape/Mozilla/Firebird, it doesn't look as pretty as it does in IE.

For example, the menu links to the left seem to have some very uneven (and ugly) black underlines, but these don't show up at all in IE. Also, some of the boxes have thicker borders to the left and right.

The 1 pixel misalignment I believe is a browser bug, and only occurs when things have been positioned using percentages. On screen, all percentages have to be "rounded" to the nearest pixel, and some browsers seem to handle this differently, creating misaligned elements, and sometimes gaps and overlaps. I don't know of any workaround for this one

As Drac said, you should fix the menu links with a "display: block" to prevent confusion.


Other than these minor issues, I really like the site. The soft colors are nice, and the overall design is pleasing. Well done.

I agree with everything said above, but there are a couple of more things that I want to comment on.

You've specified a doctype, but the page doesn't validate. You should do something about that...

In the 'portfolio' section of the page the top-menu doesn't work. The header graphic is changed and only the 'home' link works. You should also add a hover effect to the top menu links.

You should also change the menu so that the link leading to the page that the user is currently isn't a link, since it won't really take the user anywhere (and therefor it ain't a link per definition). This link should also differ somewhat from the other links so that the user easily can see which part of your page he is on.

Except from that, great work!

Goody, new comments! I guess I needed that, there are so many little things you don't notice unless someone takes a careful look into your site and shows you.
The problem is that the entire site is based on php and css templates which I've customized to fit my needs but still I have a lot to learn when it comes to cleaning-up codes.
I'll try to do my best tho.
As for the rollovers it's kina hard since the buttons are not exactly rectangles so I can't use Javascript (if I slice them that the corners of each button would be in the next one).
Could be done with Imageready tho.

The hover effect doesn't have to be anything big. Try changing the hue of the text, that way you could use a 'simple' javascript to create the effect since the area in need of changing would be rectangular.

Very nice. Far beyond my skills. I like how you have it designed. I dont like however, the mouse-over effect on the navigation.

Sorry for the downtime... my host had a problem and it was off for 2 days. We lost some files but nothing vital so we're back again.
