Basically, <div> stands for "document division." It's a generic block-level element (block-level meaning that it creates a line break before and after it, as opposed to "inline" which means, well, in line.) A <div> tag has no visual or structural significance on it's own, and it's only true purpose in life is to be manipulated by CSS.
