A well structured XHTML document, couple with a good style sheet will often fall into place properly with minimal overt positioning. I highly recommend avoiding absolute positioning in the majority of cases. Lay the page out logically, and the markup will do most of the work for you. When it doesn't, turn to the CSS to fill in, using the least fuss possible, and working your way up if needed.
