I'm working up an interim site design that uses a table within a table as a navbar. I specify both a background color and image for the navbar table. In NS 4.0, the background often loads 'late', only appearing when I switch to another app and back. In NS 3.0, the background doesn't appear at all.

I've tried putting the background specifier at the <table>, the <tr>, and the <td> levels with no luck.

Anyone know a workaround? All the different things I've tried have worked find in IE5

In other words, ditch NN 3. NN 4 is worth worrying about, but neither of the people who still use NN 3 will ever see your site. =) (emphasis on "neither")

No, I don't think NN3 will recognize the "if" statement, it's a bit too advanced.

Well, I'm a proponent of the anybrowser campaign.

While I probably won't make my personal site work with absolutely every browser in existance (after all, it's mostly an image gallery - text only browsers would be kind of silly), I do want to learn the techniques. Because of this, I've chosen to try to support NN and IE from 3.0, as well as Opera and such.

Edit: and btw, I know my site has been viewed by at least one instance of IE 3.x this year. A friend's father still uses his 486DX2/50 for his primary machine. NN 3.x wouldn't be totally out of the question (especially if my technophobe sisters ever check it out)

NN3 is ancient history! Intel 486 is ancient history! The list goes on...

My only advice would be to make your pages compatible with NN4+,IE4+,Mozilla (NN6+) and Opera5+. Making your pages work in older browsers is simply not worth it. Also, you won't be able to use DHTML and other fancy/cool stuff that's only available in the newer web browsers...

i think for older browsers, "degrades gracefully" needs to be stressed here. i, too, support the same any browser campaign. i support html 4 and css-1 and let it degrade gracefully for people with older browsers. as long as background-color works, i wouldnt worry too much about background-image showing up. it may look a bit wierd to them, but it should still be easily viewable.

la'dsasha - yes, that's what I'm aiming for. Since I can do server-side browser detection, I'll add DHTML only if the browser supports it. Right now I'm doing the basic HTML table version for lower browsers.

I'll set the background color to an average of the background image for now. I guess I'll do designs without table background images in the future
