First web browser that had support for them was MSIE. Mozilla/NN6 will have full support for them in the next version (currently it doesn't support them). And last but not least, KDE Konqueror also supports FAVICONs (it has best support for them, by the way). Anyway, to answer your question why they disappear after some time (this is only related to MSIE). MSIE stores FAVICONs in your temporary internet files / internet cache and after some temporary internet files are flushed and all FAVICONs are deleted. And that's why they disappear until you bookmark those sites again. Sometimes MSIE can also go crazy and stop looking for FAVICONs...
