Topic: My site doesn't look right in Opera6 (Page 1 of 1)

Hi, folks. I hope I put this post in the right forum. Anyway, I asked for critiques of my site on a couple different boards, and on the Guru's site reviews board, someone posted that my site doesn't look the way it's supposed to in the Opera 6 browser. He said the text on my homepage showed up black. Not good, since my background color is dark blue. My stylesheet specifies the proper text color (yellow), but the guy said it must not be coded right for Opera 6. Now, I've never used Opera 6, and have barely even heard of this browser. I don't think most people use this one, but hey, I'll try to make everyone happy.
Anyway, could anybody here look at my site in Opera 6, and give me some idea of how I could get my text to display in the right color? I'd appreciate it.

I'm able to get at your source now and there doesn't seem much wrong with it. My best guess is that Op6 is struggling with the fact that your host tries to put an ad on your CSS too:

And I think IE may be able to cope with it. Whatever it is the whole P style isn't working in Opera and your code looks fine so I'd suggest leaving a few clear lines at the top of your external CSS and that should give Opera the chance to spot that there is a style being asssigned to the P tag.

I'd assign it to the body and move the scrollbar CSS into your external one.

It also may not be wise using PNGs as some of your graphics (but I'll save that for the site review!!).

Emps, thanks for replying. So should I put the external CSS link in the body? Or do you mean put the CSS itself in the body? When I get the site completely finished and cleaned up, I'm going to put it on a paid host. No more annoying banners and pop-ups. I got rid of alot of the PNGs in the interface. I changed the mouseover buttons to JPEGs. The file sizes for PNGs were much larger than for the same graphics as JPEGs.
About Opera6, is that a free browser? Where can I get it? Also, do you know of any sites where I could find out more about making my code compatible with Op6?

tetrachromatic: Just cut the body style out and paste it into your external CSS file in something like Notepad (remember to keep a couple of empty lines at the top for the pop up).

I'm sure you'll be able to find things on Google. They do give a good list of what it can and can't do on their site. The main thing to bear in mind is that it does have good standards support but it will interpret code strictly (IE allows sloppy coding and sometimes irons over your mistakes (esp. with CSS), which is why it was fine with the problem in the your external CSS) and there are some difficulties with JavaScript. I also suspect it isn't happy with PNG as things looked a little odd on your page in Opera but it could have been something else. Bear that in mind and test your designs in all three major recent browsers and NS4.x and you should be fine.
