Understand XML as a way to "abstract" data, XML mostly provides an easy way to "abstract" data, use information regardless of the data provider and data type. Then, several technologies can help you bind data and style, or better, data and a GUI software of any kind, javascript for example, for an end user output. This "data abstraction" is the key to understanding XML, since it allows a common language for all data providers/ receivers. A sort of "common data layer" to all upcoming web applications.
