XML to replace a db? Some used to say yes, I say no! In "theory", it could, but in reality, I'd use both: XML as a data exchange format, the db as a storage device, because that's the difference: XML is not meant to be a storage device. XML is mainly a data definition/exchange format, I'd do what you want to achieve using the db as a "backbone/skeleton", and XML as "flesh": I'd output XML files on the fly from the db.
