For a site using XHTML and CSS, is there a way to make it easily printable? I'm creating a whole new page with all the site's content in one go but I would rather have something simpler and quicker for them to load if possible.

Any ideas?
Thanks so much!

WTF?

Ok, that's two questions right?

Q1: For a site using XHTML and CSS, is there any way to make it easily printable?

A1: Arr... your using CSS. Think about that for a bit, then think about it some more. If something still isn't clicking then maybe you should try a www.google.com search for "CSS + Print".

Q2: I'm creating a whole new page with all the site's content in one go but I would rather have something simpler and quicker for them to load. Is that possible?

A2: Eh, I'm not even going to answer that one. Cause if you can't answer that yourself then, well, you need to forget XHTML and CSS and go back to plain old HTML for a bit because you obviously missed some really important stuff back there.

Edit: Was that a little too harsh?

Dracusis: Maybe, but it seemed funny to me because "arr" made me think of pirates. =)

Genevieve, perhaps you'd be interested in this GN tutorial: http://www.gurusnetwork.com/tutorials/css/cssprint/cssprint1.html

A List Apart also had a nice story/tut on this a while back.

I've got to be honest with you, though, I have no idea what you meant by "I'm creating a whole new page with all the site's content in one go but I would rather have something simpler and quicker for them to load if possible." Maybe I'm just being dense.

Sorry this response is so long in the making. Basically, I've created a site based on an Education Booklet for my boss. It's pretty much easy to load, quick, all that good stuff. HOWEVER, she also wants them to be able to click a link and have the entire "booklet" in an easily printable form. MY addition to this is that because there are so many pictures, I know it will take longer for them to load than if they were doing this page by page and wondered if there was a way to load them well, quicker, or if they'll just have to deal w/ it by however fast their computer loads pics. I suppose I could have graphic/non-graphic forms.

I'll look over the tutorials.

Thanks!
Genevieve

Before you go making a separate, "printable" page, I suggest you look at http://www.alistapart.com/stories/goingtoprint . This may not entirely help with your particular case, since you seem to have multiple pages that all need to be printed out at once

Hahaha! I'm sorry! I didn't even read the thread, all I saw was the last post. I was feeling lazy, I guess. I didn't even realize that I had replied earlier.

Heh. That's OK. It was such a great article it deserved to be mentioned twice.

Genevieve: If you want the whole package to be printable, you might want to consider making it a .PDF (Adobe Acrobat) file. Granted, it would make it rather difficult to update, but if you want to "click a link and have the entire "booklet" in an easily printable form," that would probably be the best way to go. Especially if the booklet is going to be changing all that much.

We now have a section in the shiny new GN links database for this topic:
