I read an artical on it over at Developer.com http://www.developer.com/xml/article.php/793961

It oughta be a good bandwith saver, and I think you can even do 3D stuff with it
(there's an Extrude option)

Wow that really annoys me for some reason

We have SVG which is a powerful language and format for producing vector graphics - what is the point of MS getting in on the act?

Anyway VML is awfully similar to VoiceXML - which is what I first thought you were talking about.

I'd certainly be in favour of having an SVG contest - we could really have some fun and get more familiar with an important new(ish) scripting language (which as GRUMBLE has just mentioned now has a new version out).

[edit: Now I think about it I'm sure I read this article a while back and the MSDN information dates back to 1998:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/author/vml/ref/
http://www.w3.org/TR/NOTE-VML

I wonder if VML has been dropped or at least not carried forward?

See this:
www.grapl.com/vmlnotes/introduction/vml_and_svg_compared.htm

ah this might explain things a little more:
http://toxicorp.com/vml_start.html

quote:
(un)Fortunately, the W3C shelved the VML submission right after the public release of IE 5. Instead, they are concentrating on a later vector language specification, called Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG). The current spec is in candidate recommendation status here at the W3C so it looks like it will be summer 2001/early 2002 until we see it working in popular browsers (IE 6/ Mozilla 7?). Until the future arrives, the fastest way to deliver a site with graphics to a large portion of your web audience is VML.

well it is the future now (sort of )

and some discussion:
http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-svg/2000May/0003.html

it looks like VML (MS) and PGML (Adobe) were part of what was contributed to the development of SVG (although MS seem to have continued developing VML in their own way afterwards.]

[edit2:

quote:
Q.
How does SVG relate to VML and PGML?

A.
Vector Markup Language (VML) and Precision Graphics Markup Language (PGML) were both submitted in 1998 as early proposals for beginning a W3C vector graphics standard. VML and PGML are more similar than they are different, but, in general, VML supports the constructs necessary for office graphics, while PGML was proposed to support richer graphics more suited to the professional design and publishing community.

As a result of these and other proposals, the W3C assembled the SVG Working Group. SVG is the culmination of these efforts to fill the need for a standardized vector format that incorporates the best features of both VML and PGML.

Ok sounds good Emperor, but ahh exactly what kinda plug in do you need for SVG? It obiously doesn't come with microsoft's browser if Microsoft came out with their own version.
(I hate it when they do that! That did that with Java too!)

Maskkkk: Well this came up in the GN a few days ago. I was playing with SVG a month or so ago and opened the file in IE and the plugin seemed to already be there as it just asked me to click a button and everything ran nicely.

Try it - if that doesn't work get the plugin here:
www.adobe.com/svg/viewer/install/main.html

I'll move this to the XML forum as SVG is a subset of XML.

I also have a lot of SVG links and I'll drop them in the SVG section of the GN's links database tomorrow.

We can kick around a few ideas and work from there

Perhaps 'a show and tell' first rather than a contest?

A 'show and tell'(or something similiar) wouldn't be a bad idea. We could start with a theme and then everyone made something about it and then tell how it was done. That way everyone would learn something during the process

I think it is to early to start a contest on vml, I have a feeling (which might be way of target...) that not many here are familiar with it so a contest might a to abrubt start. At least it would feel a bit to much for me to start with a contest the first time I touch it...

SVG is one of those things that I keep looking at but it's always been put in my "Not ready yet" basket.

Anyways, this plugin from adobe is an "SVG" plugin yah? And it will work in ~all~ browsers?

OK I've throw all my links on SVG into here:
http://development.gurusnetwork.com/links/151/

if anyone has anymore then feel free to throw theirs in too (there is an add link button on the right).

I'm just fiddling with things to get the example I created a couple of months ago working online and I'll kick things off (unless anyone else fancies showing and teling first).

[edit: Ok the problem was that the server wasn't recognising the SVG mime type and this (changed for the new plugin) will work if added to your .htaccess file:

AddType image/svg-xml svg ]

[edit2: And for those not following closely I have started the SVG Show and Tell thread here:
www.ozoneasylum.com/Forum8/HTML/000463.html ]

and got this definition:

As it hasn't actually been a success I'm unsure what you mean
