Fiddle. Take things out and put things in, and try to come up with something that works as you expect it to, even if it's not what you're going for. Then modify it until you notice something specific that's not working as it should. When you've narrowed down a specific issue like that, look for an alternate way of doing the same thing which works around the problem. I suspect that the absolute positioning + negative margins might be confusing IE 5/mac. This is one of those things that you won't likely figure out without being able to sit at a computer with the problematic browser and fiddle with the page.
