Apparently, the combination of absolute positioning and negative margins causes IE5/Mac to fail. It's a known bug. This is a [url=http://exp.hicksdesign.co.uk/articles/archive/000030.php]>little article I found<[/url], and while it doesn't relate exactly to what you're trying to do, it does contain a CSS hack for IE5/Mac specific rules that could come in handy.
