Tables are for holding things. CSS is for layout. I highly recommend Zeldman's new book, "Designing with Web Standards" as well as Eric Meyer's book, "Eric Meyer on CSS". You also have an excellent resource at the Guru's Network. Spending a lot of time and effort coding for old browsers is just a waste of your time. The version 4 browsers are less than one percent of the audience now and it's time they cut the cord. Take the plunge. You won't regret it.
