I no longer have ie5 available to test with, so I can't see the problem. I would assume, however, that we are dealing with ie5.x's misinterpretation of the box model which causes it to mis-render all boxes containing margins and/or padding.

here's a good thread at the GN addressing a lot of ie5 problems

Also, do a search for "box model hack"

IE 5 doesn't handle margin: auto.
Fortunately there's a great fix for this, see http://stilleye.com/temp/marginfix.html (http://stilleye.com/temp/IEmarginFix.zip)

HZR:

great link I've found this to be a little easier :

body {text-align: center;}

.container { text-align: left;}

works in IE 5 just great.

You can actually have more than one IE on the same machine. It's great for testing and the downloads are light: http://www.ozoneasylum.com/Forum1/HTML/008286.html and also
http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/1373/

ps- the box model hack is working great
