Yup, [url=http://www.ozoneasylum.com/5015]there is[/url]. It's proprietary markup, though, which I generally try to avoid. I once experimented with this when I was trying to find a nice layout for my site, but I couldn't find a solution that worked in all browsers, so I went in a different direction (ie, I abandoned the idea of opacity).
