I don't mean did you put a black box in for a background, but rather is the movie's background black? I think the default is white, so if you didn't define the background as black maybe it shows as white until the movie loads. You change the movie's properties such as dimensions, frame rate and background color in a dialog. Forget the menu command - it's comand-m on a mac.
