Topic: Help with video file format! (Page 1 of 1)

This is driving me crazy...

I have two digital cameras that both will take small video clips. A Cannon IXUS 300 and a Casio QV-2800UX. However when I try to import these files into either Premiere or After Effects they will not read the file!

What am I doing wrong?

Hmm... Alwaysthis is probably a file format issue.

What format does the camera record the video file as?

They are simple AVI files. Windows Media Player has no problem viewing them so I know they are a recognized file type. I am thinking there is some sort of binding or something on the file that makes them unreadable? I don't know...

It really is driving me crazy.

They are all about 10 to 20 second video clips which I want to manipulate and combine but unable to do so as no program I have can read the damn things... Only viewing them one at a time in media player. This just can't be right... I don't get it.

That does indeed sound strange. What version of Premire are you using?

And have you contected the tech support for your camera?... THey might know what's going down, but if it's happening on both cameras I'd be betting the problem rests with the programs. he files might be using some stange codec that Premier/after effect can't read but I always assumed that premier used the system installed video codec's so err, yeah, you got me stumped.

Does this happen with any other avi files or just the ones from the camera?... Can you find out how the avi's form the camera are encoded? It should mention that in the manual.

I am STILL having problems here with these things. I tried a decoder that a friend suggested but they still wont load in Premiere or After Effects. FRUSTRATING!!!!!

What the hell can I do?

I am in the Philippines and the cameras are old so no manuals or tech support. I was hoping someone else here had these problems sbefore as well and new what sort of decoder I needed to run on the files.

My guess it's some old 8-bit codec, or odd color space encoding which is causing a problem.

I would try Virtualdub http://www.virtualdub.org/ to convert it to some uncompressed
format for editing or if you have Windows XP you could try Microsoft Movie Maker.

If those solutions don't work and they are not to large; say 10-30mg I could try it in Video Vegas, or Studio 7 for you.

That Virtual Dub program works! I just saved it as an AVI after opening it in that program and now Premiere has no problem recognizing the file...
