Yeah, the marquee tool is also very usefull for this kind of thing. I stopped using the slice tool when I started designing with CSS. Nowadays when I'm moving a design from PS to HTML I just stamp all the layers togther (win shortcut key: ctrl+alt+shift+e <- kinaa like "flattern all" but it leaves all the layers in tact.) and cut it up using my guides and save the images one at a time. Which seems to be a much faster and less fiddly process on a whole. Oh and you don't actually need image ready to use slices. In fact, I've never used image ready when working with slices. I just made them in Photoshop and saved for web from there.
