LOL I've been posting that link everytime a similiar subject pops up. I noticed that it is on the site that you linked to over in the PS forum. I was rather suprised to see it there. And I really love Synthetic Lighting linked to on the Raytracing in PS page. Actually, on the Synthetic Lighting URL, navigate up one and you'll see a bunch of other good essays on various light subjects. I learned how to make some neat paper things from some link hopping from there. Try this.

Mapping the Sphere is also a good read. Neat little trick to keep in your bag.

Pretty amazing alright! One thing that blew me away...and I'm not sure I've got it right... but at the bottom of the page it says the last update was May of '97. If that means the tracing tutorial is 4 years old.... dat boy dun be hed his time...

Just now going through the synthetic lighting link... excellent info there... and from there I'll go.....

The 'paper' thing is great I used to spend hours making paper planes... amazing what you can do with a sheet of paper ain't it!

A long time ago I made a post about the RayTracing in PS, but with out the benefit of a 3D prog. You can use Lighting Effects in PS to pseudo-simulate the renders.

Use a red light on the left shooting to the right, a green light on the bottom shooting up, then 2 oppossing black lights. And you can do it all in one fell swoop instead of dinking with the channels seperately. I got some great results with this, but it took a *lot* of fiddling. I used Doc's Patented Multi-Tieed Gauss combo to build the height map, then Lighting Effects as described. The only real draw back is that it isn't really condusive for shapes with "depth" or that are slightly complicated.

Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I just used one black light at a diagonal instead of two oppossing. Something like that. Make sense?

It's definitley technique worth playing with. Trying different RG light colours at different positions/directions can do some neat things.

"black light" Well I'll be... never even considered black light. Well I did... but that was a verrrrrry long time ago and it had something to do with posters and false teeth glowing in the dark! <LOL>
