Sorry, I've had a couple of job leads that required my attention, and then I got all stuck on how to create a glass texture. I stayed up real late last night and could not make it look right... then this morning... ta da... well, it doesn?t really look like glass, but close enough for my skill level. I bet I will look back on this and laugh at myself for not knowing the right answer.

So right now I am almost done and will post the file soon.

Cheers!!!

Hello,

Here is my backhand return to you. It took me some time to learn how to produce a glass material. The file, and a larger image are at http://reitveld.homestead.com/ozone_glass_with_cubes.html

For those who are learning, I have added a screen shot of the glass material I started off with. The only difference between the screen shot and the model is the index of refraction is set much lower (higher numbers makes a larger refraction spread). In my mind the cup still looks a bit plastic like, and has a surreal nature to it, but I?m still learning, so, in order to keep this match alive, I ran with it. Anyone here have any advice on how to make real looking glass in 3D Studio???

InI, Look close into the glass and you will see a faint reflection of your last render.

Take your time man, this is for fun!

I have been reading on how to make glass with some tutorials... and well you select the TYPE BUTTON (very top of materials) and select Raytrace, then set the Raytrace Basic Parameters to the following:
Diffuse: Red = 111, Green = 111, Blue = 111
Transparency: Red = 253, Green = 253, Blue = 253
Index of Refr. = 1.5
Specular Level = 460
Glossiness = 80

It really looks like glass!!! You can also pick the Raytracer Controls rollout and under Global Parameters select the number of reflections/refractions. Very cool stuff.

Hey Ini,

Wow, I'm really sorry for the delay. I'm not trying to make excuses, but when it rains... it pours. 1) Big project fired up at work; 2) wife had unexpected medical problems (all better now!); 3) Had to do some work to my resume & portfolio; 4) THE IN-LAWS CAME INTO TOWN (enough said).

So, today, I plan to work on our model and get something to you by tonight (er... my time. )

So? I?ve taken a look at some of the websites that describe Switzerland and it looks like a wonderful place! Maybe I?ll visit it some day in the future and go yodeling in the mountains? like a typical American tourist. So? if I go there? which language should I spend time learning? I bet I can get around just knowing English? and getting laughed at behind my back (no problem) but the websites say you speak German, French and Italian. WOW!!! I speak a bit of German and just a few swear words in French? but this probably will not help me find where the bathroom is!!!
)

Holy Crackers Ini!!!! That web page is so cool!!! How the heck did you do that? I thought the page was neat until I accidentally slid my mouse over an image and it started to grow!!!!!!! I thought it was my lack of sleep and jerked the mouse down the screen only to see the others start to grow. Wow? that is a really cool piece of code you made for that page.

So, you can guess that I only know how to do the simplest of HTML and anything beyond posting a jpg impresses the heck out of me.

I still like the match, so 2 more returns is fine with me. Then I will sit back and watch you and Skaarjj play a round.

I must say that my returns may not look like much, but I have learned something new in each return. In my first image I was learning about reflective materials. In my second it was how to create glass, and finally in my third it was the array tool. As you can see in the third image I did get better at both the reflective and translucent materials.

Thanks for the mini update on the languages of Switzerland. I still would like to go there within the next decade or so, but being an American, I only know English, so I?m a bit intimidated about traveling to another country where I can?t even read a street sign. So? in order for myself not to worry about it, I will learn some basic language skills in another language (German as I think it is easier than French) so I can at least ask someone where I can go to poop. LOL. Or something like that. Who knows? maybe in a decade Americans won?t be hated so much? Oh God what am I saying? We are the source of all evil? We are evil? Our only wish is to rule all the nations and have their entire supply of chocolate and gasoline shipped to our front door... HA HA HA HA. ~reitveld shakes himself like a wet dog~ Sorry? for a moment there I was possessed by George Bush. Augh!!!

I also like to draw (draft) using coordinates and numbers. I?ve used AutoCAD for over a decade and it 'requires' number input, but 3D Studio is a bit soft with numbers and is more visually oriented. It is the hardest thing for me just to eyeball something. I really want that precision to know 'exactly' rather than 'maybe.' I fight with myself every day to loosen up and just be more of an artist. I had really hoped that better controls would be placed in 3DS to allow for more accurate modeling but it appears that the 3D community is not calling for it? so better controls probably are not coming anytime soon.

Thanks for the kind word and the potential link to zooboing. Cheers!

Ini,

It will be another week before I can start work on my return. Sorry but I promise to get to it as soon as possible.... and make it a good one.

Cheers!

Well Ini, You have been a very patient person. Thank you for that. As I have said in my e-mail to you, if you wish to take up a faster pace match with someone else then that is ok by me.

I have kept my promise and returned a volley to your side of the court. It is up to you if you wish to continue one more turn or not. I can not promise a faster return as my work and life have been kicked into 5th gear... oh well, I like life this way.

Now onto my artistic thought process. When I looked at your last creation I felt like I was floating in a big winery vat? or maybe space? it really depended on how inebriated I was at the time. So I thought? hey? everyone says DON?T DO SPACE STUFF, IT WONT GET YOU A JOB. But then I thought? Hey, I really have not done a space thingy, so what the heck. My only regret about this model is that I have lost the glass and the bottle. Maybe if I had to do it over I would have made the Earth map incorporate land masses that looked like the bottle you made.

You may need these maps:
Milky Way
Map of Earth
Map of Clouds.

You can find these maps on my website or at http://gw.marketingden.com/planets/planets.html

Take care Ini, and let me know what your thoughts are regarding this match.

Cheers.

Ini, you were sooooo patient with me that I'm in no position to bitch. I would say do LIFE first then this match SECOND.

I also have had many things to do and with the good weather here I am doing more outside. My most pressing thing is moving my website. Homestead is going to raise their rates from $20/year to $180. They really like themselves. So I'm moving all my work over to zooboing.com Now for a code guru like yourself this may be easy but I made everything with their wysiwig program... so now I must recreate everything in MS FrontPage. Not tons of work, but it still takes time.

Cheers!!!

Hey... sorry everyone about all the lost preview images. My old web host 'homestead' raised their rates from $20 year to around $160 and so I've taken down that site and moved over to www.burlee.com Ini... would you mind if I change the thread links to your cool website? if you mind then I will find the thumbnails and try to post them on my site. Let me know.

ok,,, the match continues here ---> http://www.ozoneasylum.com/Forum11/HTML/000419.html
