Topic awaiting preservation: Is this possible...? (Page 1 of 1)

I am wanting to test PHP and Perl scripts on my personal computer at home before I take the time to upload the file, see if it works, rework it, etc...

I have MySQL, PWS and Active Perl right now. I was wondering if it is even possible to set up my computer to be able to run the Perl scripts just like they would be if I were uploading them on my server.

If anyone knows of a good website that discusses this issue or if it is even possible I would GREATLY appriciate it. Especially if I go to all the trouble of trying it, just to find out that it won't work that way.

Just to let you know, I am running Windows98.

Sure it can be done!
I guess most of us develops PHP/MySQL/Perl locally, everyone has his/her own flavor though, take a look here for some examples. Or du a search, the topic has been up lot's of times.

Thats how I do most of my work. I test it out at home and then upload then to the server. I had Apache and AS perl running on windows 98 with some success. I now use Apache, AS perl, MySQL and HomeSite on windows 2000 to do most of my development. I found Windows 2000 to be quite a bit more reliable. Do a search on this forum for FoxServ. At least I think it was called FoxServ. Someone posted info on that a while back. I think that has Apache, PHP, perl and MySQL all in one package.

CPrompt, I would suggest you to switch over from PWS to Apache, because that's web server which is used on UNIX OS (and probably where you're hosting your web site). Also, when you code things in PERL & PHP don't forget that some things are different in UNIX (i.e. path names). And last but not least, you can get a package that will install & setup all this things called phpdev4 from the following location: http://www.firepages.com.au/php.php3

Since you're already thinking about Windows 2000, I would suggest you to get Windows XP...

THe only thing that scares me about XP is the product authentication crap.

Hi mr.max,

Do you know if it's the CD-Key that determines the type of authentication? Or is the coperate version a differnt release? I refuse to use XP because of that. I change hardware all the time, I would be on the phone with M$ every week!! Sorry to go off topic

I can't confirm this 100%. I do know for sure that in Office XP CD-Key determinates whether to use product activation or not. Probably the same goes for Windows XP. I doubt that they will release different builds (build that's sent to those big companies is 2600), but we'll easily confirm this when Windows XP becomes available in stores (if it has the same build number then CD-Key determinates whether to use product activation or not).

Thanks for the info, mr.maX. The MS expert here at work is going to send me a copy of XP that has the auth disabled. I will take a look and see what build it is. I would imagine it's the same one your talking about. I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

XP is something that I was thinking about as well, but I am still leaning towards 2000. I have used 2000 and like it a lot. I may wait until they release XP and play around with that and see which I may go with. I am updating my computer a lot right now and the OS is just one thing. Bigger HD (gonna use the current one to put Linux on ) LOTS more memory since that shit is super cheap right now and just got a new CD burner.

Gonna check on Apache and start work. Good thng because I wasn't real fond of using PWS.

Windows XP is Windows 2000's successor and therefore OS stability should be the same (both are based on NT kernel). Only thing that's really different is the interface...
