Topic awaiting preservation: iis/asp

I installed iis recently and i pasted all my asp files in the wwwroot folder, but i dont know why i can only see my htm files and not the asp ones, i upgraded my win xp home edition to the corporate one, then i went to add/remove programs -add/remove-windows components and selected "ALL" the iis options, i try to open the asp file typing http://localhost/myaspfile.asp or http://0.0.0.0/myaspfile.asp (with my actual ipaddress) but its not working i just cant open my files in the web browser, am i skipping some step??, does anyone know why is this happening??, what am i doing wrong.

are you just seeing the code displayed in your browser? have you double checked you have the extensions installed correctly in iis?? and what err msg you getting when u try looking at an .asp file?

One other thought have you actually set IIS for scripts type ie vis basic or javascript and have you set the permissions on the directory for read write and execute scripts...the IUSR A/C Needs to be able to create a temp file in the virtual directory for asp to work and if permissions not set correctly the whole thing falls over. If ya head over to microsoft there is a big FAQ area on ASP and common faults and solutions.

If ya have any probs still drop me an email i am running iis 5 on a win 2k pro server and have pws set up on a win2k w/station for testing and have asp running happily on both.

I'm not getting any message it just never loads completly (and trust me i have waited and waited), ohh once i get a message that said the server is busy, does it make sense??, and how to do set the permissions u r talking about , as u can figure out i'm a student and dont even know how to check if all the extensions are installed, but i clicked on all the iis option in the add/remove software option.

ill take a look to the microsoft page, and if i cant still figure out how to fix this ill email you, thanks for replying

ok lets assume you are working on a workstation the principles apply exactly the same to an iis server from win2k microsoft personal web server is virtually identical to IIS bar one dll file.

I will runt through the steps on my win 2k setup if needed email me ya config but the same principles apply to all win platforms virtually.

1. click on the start menu ... goto administrative tools then internet information server..
2. click on the default web icon if you see some strange looking folders including _vti_bin or _vti_script you have the extensions installed...

if you havent you need to install the microsoft front page extensions.....dont panic asp uses the same server extensions on an iis platform

lets assume the worst and you dont find these folders, ok next step install the ms front page extensions as follows.

click on the actions menu and select new then extensions admin...this will generate the extensions if you have not already had them installed.

ok next step. lets assume now that you have your extensions installed and that you are still having problems.

the most common problem is permissions values set on the virtual route. so lets go back to that action menu, click on the permisions wizard button this time. this is under the all tasks submenu. you need to make sure that read (script execute permissions are on) if you have got that set on your directory they wont work even if the extensions are loaded.

and that just about wraps it up. sorry i cant be any more help specifically untill i know what platform u are on, but as InI says let us know what win platform is it a workstation or server if so which version, the set up is slightly different in each mode. but those are the two most common issues when first trying to set up asp on iis,, hope it helped

I have windows xp orporate edition, btw i see this folders: _private and _vti_log and i know its not my file as it works fine in school i also tried a simple response.write and didnt work either :S , im using texpad but by default the asp files open only with front page ..... hmmm im still clueless.

ok for a start, i should have made a slight clarification, i use ultradev 4 and it uses the front page xtns to dump some of its files in there....

as i said different setups require different methods and as ultradev is now rapidly becoming a major tool in the asp field it was one possible answer... i dint say it was the only answer if you read my post but given that lala didnt give out that much info to start with i was showing one possibilty. also visual interdev uses the same technique...

and as for cinfusing info that came straight off the microsoft website....and macromedia web site.

and just one more final comment i have just finished a huge database driven web site for a large model agency which took some 4 months to complete, so i kinda do know what i am talking about. but like i said maybe i should have clarified more my techniques and tools, in my reply.

so if the original site had been created with those tools and copy and pasted as was implied it would have failed with the type of error given by lala.

one further little check right click default web site in iis manager select properties.....
