Topic awaiting preservation: Linux (BSD) Low End Solution

I have been wondering a lot about what are the requirements for a basic server.

I am wondering about the low end linux server.
I am wondering about the differences.

Say a scale. 100 hits daily, 1,000 hits daily, 10,000 hits daily, 100,000, 1,000,000.

Using both a database some flat and a backend language.

I don't want to nail downs specifics too much. Because I am looking for a more general answer.

Say you telnet into the server or FTP to the server in a consol enviorment, no graphical work...

Just a box sitting in a little room connected to the net.

I see the comercials where the 1000 sever farm is turned into one linux tower. I am wondering how well this really works.


I have heard things like a 386 could clog a T3 with traffic. But does that 386 have 512 M of ram... with only a single 1k file...

I am really unsure of the hardware side of things, and am looking for answers to these kinds of questions in todays enviorment, all the information is based in the past. What are all of your experiences?

doesnt have to be the best hardware as long as it doesnt go over 10,000 hits a day.

My web site is running on a dedicated RedHat server and is currently running between 10,000-20,000 hits/day (1000-3000 page views) with no problems. I will get back to you on what the specs are, but I'm pretty sure it's a fairly low-end pentium.

I am also using PHPsniff on every page to load stylesheets dynamically, which is way overkill, and I'm sure performance takes a huge hit processing something as massive as PHPsniff on every page.

I would just like to point out that BSD *is not* Linux.

BTW BSD is real good when it comes to TCP/IP networking...

I know it is different, but the hardware is pretty similar for both operating systems.

This is a good place if you are looking for info on BSD, there are also a few linux related posts. Try searching thought the old threads, but beware it is definitely biased toward the BSDs and FreeBSD in particular.
