Hello,
I am looking to use either Invision, which is PHP and MySQL based, or Yabb, which is perl based. I don't know anything about anything, it seems like, I'm just learning as I go.
Would one of these be easier for a newbie to install than the other?
I saw the learn about perl post so I will go and do that now.
Thanks,
Pam

phpBB is the best free forum by far, PHP and MySQL based and as per your requirement, easy to set up. I believe you just upload the files/directories, CHMOD one file and go to the URL in your browser for the board where it's all point and click from there to configure, even sets up your database for you (you'll have to know db name, hostname, password etc). Then you take ccare of some CHMOD and file deletion for security purposes then you're set to go.

By the way, anyone using phpBB2 should upgrade to 2.02 and check the new template caching mod option in the /contrib directory included in the release. Eases server loads and speeds page generation, could be very important for a few board admins round these parts

I Highly suggest you check out phpBB 2.x - I have been using phpBB since the 1.x days and have been using 2.x for about 7 months now. It's fast, easy to mod, has a wonderful support community and tons of great features. VERY easy to setup, one can easily go from nothing to working forum in 5 minutes no lie!

Thanks a lot guys
I don't know if this should be a new topic but I've just been told that a full-on BB isn't what they want. They just want a place to post a free materials exchange. It is on a green non-profit site that I am helping out.
Would I be able to trim down one of the big boards enough for that or shall I start looking for something else entirely?
I really appreciate the help,
Pam

I would think just roll-your-own. That might be a little easier to get exactly what you want.

I'd also vote Invision Board, it's better looking, and 90% of the time it uses fewer queries than phpBB or any of the other boards, paid or free ones, which in turn gives you faster page loading and better overall performance.

Plus the Admin CP of InvisionBoards is better and more complete than the one of phpBB.

But there are a TON of freeboards you could try, here are just a few of the highlights...
