Topic awaiting preservation: best webhost? (Page 1 of 1)

hi,

I've been trying to look for a good webhosting service that would provide lots of SPACE and cgi/php/ssi/... the only problem is, I'm a poor student so I would rather it be free(although the only free webhost of that kind USED to be f2s.com) or the fee should be minimal. I would like a fast and reliable host with none of those banners ads and with whom I could redirect my domain name for free. I know I might be asking for a bit much, but if you guys know of any please do share!

If I may suggest a (possibly) cheaper alternative.

Do you have a broadband connection? If so, you can host your own. If you have a Windows machine, just get you a copy of Apache (www.apache.org) and install that. Point your domain name to your IP address. I also suggest easyDNS (www.easydns.com), as you can change your IP address at your whim (great, if you're ISP is using DHCP to distribute your IP address).

If you also have a spare computer (nothing fancy -- harddrive, a little memory, 468 or better cpu), you can get even fancier. Install Linux (if you're not familiar with Linux, I suggest SME Server by Mitel (www.e-smith.org)), and now, you have as much web space as you have hard drive space (which is really the limit to what you can develop, anyways, right?), your own mail server (everybody_in_the_world@yourdomain.com), and whatever server features you could ever hope for (php, cgi, ssi, etc)

I'm a big do-it-yourselfer, and right now, i'm hosting 5 domains at home off of my cable modem. And trust me -- I am *NOT* an IT wizard by any stretch of the imagination.

Free is about as cheap as it gets.

Actually I should clarify. Most don't allow this and it will be a violation of the terms of service. Most of them won't notice or care if you put a personal site up which gets minor traffic but you do risk losing your service. caveat emptor

The best hosting I've found yet is dynamite host . They have the cheapest prices I've ever seen and alot to offer. (yep even offers just as much as rw for less). So far they been really reliable. I did alot of shopping around, and I would really recommend it.

oooh... they are at the Colo4Dallas facility... i may have to check them out.

I can personally drive down there and bitch at them if i have problems..... EXCELLENTE!!
