The poster has demanded we remove all his contributions, less he takes legal action.
We have done so.
Now Tyberius Prime expects him to start complaining that we removed his 'free speech' since this message will replace all of his posts, past and future.

I think if we ask we may be able to do even a little easier.

Is netbpm on the server or can it be put there?

butcher wrote
this which I just helped him debug in the SS forum.

It takes a zip file, uncompresses it and creates the necessary thumb's

seemes pretty complete and easy right there.

Not to knock what you've done InI that's pretty damn cool right there.
but (and sorry I haven't really researched this totally) it seems the Netpbm package would be easier and give us more hooks. It should require a recompile of PHP either (I think that's pugz main worry)

If it helps any, you don't need to touch the PHP setup to use netPBM. All that has to be done is to drop the netPBM binaries in and adjust the paths in the thumbnail function. It can very easily be made to handle PNG and other formats if neccessary.

If you don't want to do that, and the server has GD 2.0.1 or later you could use imagecopyresampled(). According to all accounts, it's supposed to give pretty good results.

No GD at this time. I'm trying to rectify that, but I don't think it's going to happen soon (I'd need to move the site onto another server, and that's just not feasible until later this year - and then I'll move GN and PSPong to the same server).

well, InI, you're just doing, what I was planning on doing...
(read: You rock, man!)
hm, have a look at the doc for imagecopyresampled() function on php.net. there's one function, that implements bicubic resampling of an image. using gdlib, but it just might show you the math behind it. (aeh, here's the link: http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.imagecopyresampled.php - look under date 27-Jan-2002 10:46.

so long,

Hey INI!

How about reigning in that freekin ego of yours!

Your knowledge and talent for all things programming is very apperent to anyone who frequents the Asylum. I was not infering that you didn't know about GD or that the simple code I have written to make a thumbnail can even begin to compare to the code you have written that is so far above my skills I don't even understand it. I came across the thread and thought I had something for once that might be able to help, so I posted it. If you were not so busy trying to be all things to all people around here you might realize that even though some of us amatures don't have the skills that allow us to understand everything as you do, it doesn't mean we don't want to try and contribute from time to time.

I thought I had something to contribute for once and put it on the table. If it can't be used fine, but it was in no way ment to compete with what you were trying to accomplish.

I'm sure I will think twice about trying to be a part of anything else from now on.

well, InI, I for one love what you're doing for this project.

Don't let your self down, because someone feels trotted on his ego. (but then, I only flew over the last few paragraphs... )

The file format is only half the way, unfortunatly...
If I remember correctly, there's a number of ways a jpeg can be compressed. But only one or two should be in use nowadays...
good luck. it's all I can say.

Ini

I don't want, nor did I ask for you or anyone else to leave this place. The great thing about the Asylum is it's diversity of people, personalities and skills. The other thing I've always liked about the Asylum was how it's members handled whatever misunderstandings they had in a mature, grown up, and private matter. It's always been my understanding that if regular Asylum members had a disagreement, or didn't see eye to eye on something, a private email was the appropriate way to handle it, so I sent you one.

I took exception to you feeling the need to tell me to go look at your posts in the SS forum, just because you felt I might be telling you that you didn't know something about the GD. As I told you in my email, that was not in the least my intent, and that the post was for the benefit of others following the thread that might not have had the need to look into such things yet.

I apologize if you feel that I was asking you to leave this place, nor do I understand where you got that idea. It would certainly be a great loss to everyone in the Asylum if you chose to do so.

You can go full steam ahead with whatever it is you want as you will not find me impeding the progress of this project again, and I would like to give all concerned my sincere apologies for any unpleasantness I may have caused.

After a time of reflection I have come here to apologize to Ini for making judgments of him in any way. It was not proper of me to do and I'm sorry. I would also like to apologize for any statements I may have made that could be misconstrued as pride or ego in myself, They are not the things I expect of myself.

I hope everyone can except this from me.

Hey all, I just think we're getting a little ahead of ourselves.

And I know nowhere along the way was anyone trying to be mean, condescending etc.

I have a few more idea's here but I'm going to post them as a new thread.
