For a simple reason, file access is a heavy task (if not the heavier), so multiple file accesses, conversion to netbpm formats, from netbpm formats... But that code is way cool. As you said, the other reason for a pure php approach is Pugzly's need not to recompile php. In the above code, if you look closely, I got at least the jpg format described, since I can "read" how the binary input is parsed. Since color depth, pixels, width and height are separate, I think I can do something nice. What do you think? Pugz is concerned, so... Be sure I won't do anything else before I'm through with this.
