Ok - playing with animated gifs...

Is it just not possible to use a glow or drop shadow in an animated gif without getting that stupid white matte around the edges of it?

*edit img tag not working...*

*edit2 - if I could get it uploaded properly, I'd be doin' good! I'll attack it on monday... dunno what I did wrong...*

bodhi23, I have been trying to same thing, but getting the white background too. I'm sure some of the more versed in this will post how to get it done, but I have not had success yet.

You DID specify the matte as 2B0404?

Thank you. That's a big help. I'll be farting around with that today.

Thanks Mahjqa - I did try that - for some reason it just didn't come out right. I'll play around with it when I get a few free moments. Time seems to be scarce this Monday. Now the day's almost over and my brain is a little fried...

Ok - let's try this one again!

The problem I'm having has to do with the uploading at this point... I thought I changed it so that the matte wasn't a problem - now I have to go back again!

It looks really cool before I upload it. I thought I had the matte fixed, but I don't. Back to the drawing board again.

Can someone please delete the following files from the Asylum sig hosts? http://formclot.net/sig/wheelsig.gif http://disk919.com/sig/wheelsig.gif

I must not be doing something right in imageready... I did change the matte color, but it appears not to have taken...

Check my first post in this thread. Look if you did that ´matte´ thing correctly. If you have no idea what it´s for, or have never played with GIF transparency before, I suggest you take a look at this excellent GIF transparency Tutorial.

It looks nice, it's clear that you've found out who it works... but I think the transition between the 'o' and the rotationg thingamabob (the eight-spiked wheel of buddhism?) is a bit harsh.

I don't have a lot of experience with animated gifs... thought I'd play with a siggy. My initial idea was to have the 'o' turn into the wheel with a flash, that's where the glow question came in.
I thought I had corrected the matte, and I copied your post exactly. It still didn't seem to take. It shouldn't be so difficult to change the layers in an animated gif - alas...
I'll keep plugging away at it... a learning experience. Thanks for your tips Mahjqa - I so admire your work!

okie dokie - I think I got it:

At last! I think my problem was that the matte wasn't taking on any but the bottom layer...
No tellin.
So, whadya think?
Is it crap? What should be improved? Mind you - I don't have much animation experience...

Nice. I like the font, and the transition is now nice and smooth, but what exactly is the wheel doing when it appears? It looks like it's wobbling a little and getting distorted. Why don't you just have it stay still, and just fade in and out? I think that would look more... graceful(?).

or you could have it morph into a symbol that goes with the name
just a suggestion. I dig the font though

The font came from Font Freak, it's called Caliph...

The wheel is supposed to be spinning. In the drwaing I used, the center was a little lop-sided... and so I guess it does have a bit of a wobble to it... I could clean it up... I was so excited to finally get the transparency right, I didn't pay much attention to the rest of it!
Now that I have the method down, I'll probably make some adjustments to the design...
Anyone have any suggestions about spinning animation?

The eight spoked wheel represents the 8-fold way of the Buddha... so it does go, after a fashion...

Given the distance between the spokes, I would say that two or three frames would be all you would need for the spinning--just rotate the wheel a little until the spokes have moved by one increment (ie, the spoke on the top has moved to the position where the spoke to the right of it was). Very easy concept, actually, just hard to put into words.

I will definitely play with it... That's what I initially thought, but it didn't really look right in practice. I like the idea though, so I'll keep pluggin' away at it!

Nice SiG bodhi23. It's a great feeling when a sig starts to look the way you want it to isn't it?
If you want to rotate the "wheel" here are my thoughts. If you just turned it along the spoke axis I don't think it would be noticed as each frame would be the same. So as Suho said just two or three layers copied from the original wheel with each one rotated a fraction of the distance between each spoke should give a good turning wheel and small size.
I hope that makes sense

Umm, I think if you rotate it to the position of the next spoke, it will appear to be static, too.
Use 4 frames.
1) Duplicate the original, CTRL+T , and with the cursor outside the bounding box, drag til the top spoke is 1/4 of the way to the next spoke.
2) Duplicate the new layer, repeat transform.
3) repeat step 2
4) See step 3
That worked for me.

That is hard to put into words.

I did try 4 frames at first, it didn't seem to spin the way I wanted, but maybe I didn't do the rotation right... As difficult as it might be to put into words, I think I get the message... I'll go play with it...
Thanks for the input!

Ok - with fewer frames now...

I created the wheel form myself this time, instead of using a pre-drawn image... it's a little more symmetrical. And the fewer frames does look better. I think I like this one...
