The second one is very pretty (great colors), except that whatever bevel technique you used created an ugly unclean/jagged surface. You should fix that.

Nice splurge of creativity Moth I really like the second one. Have you tried antenna, antenni ? or a simple pattern on the wings, or mayhap that will make the effect too confusing?

Thank you all for the comments. I'm partial to the second one as well. The sword has some jaggies and overall doesn't have the impact I was hoping for.

Slime, I agree with you about the bevel. I used the bevel-soft chisel layer effect in attempt to make the moth shape appear more like natural quartz. I'll try a different bevel technique as soon as I'm able.

Taobaybee, I decided against attenae because they never like right in a small gif for me. Either people can't see them or the look like rabbit ears. I also wished to keep the design somewhat stylized. The idea of patterning on the wings does appeal to me. Maybe with a separate plasma effect of a different color, like green. Hmmm... *thinking*

Everyone else, the effect is done with satin. There is a large plasma effect thread on www.photoshoptechniques.com that I got the bare bones from. I'm at work now so this will be vague and loose.

Basically you make a shape. Select layer effects satin. Change the color from black to another color and change from multiply to one of the brightner settings, such as color dodge or vivid light. Play with the parameters of the satin to get what you like. Set the angle at 0 degrees and click OK.

Now the really cool part.

Jump to image ready.
In the animation area, create a second frame.
Click on the satin effect sub layer and change the angle to 180 degrees. (this will effect only the second frame)
Go back to the animation and click on the first frame.
Tween 12 frames.
Delete the last frame of your animation. (to prevent a duplication of the first frame.)

Run the animation and see how tween handles all the rotation without you needing to do anything else.

That's it. Everthing else is layer effects and personal preferences. Now go play.

Wow Moth, that looks awsome. If you put another layer above it and had it rotate the other direction it might make it look more plasma-ey (sp?)

Taobaybee. Great work! I forgot to mention that inverting the shape of the satin leads to different effects.

Rauthrin, that's whats going on in my sig.

There is a lower satin layer rotating in one direction. The bevel layer is on top of that and an other satin layer on top rotating in the other direction.

Keep playing.

Tried it out on a moon, works very well indeed. Maybe other tricks can be done like that too, I should look into this.

It reminds me more or water waves reflected on (duh) reflecting objects, suchs as shiny metal. That lil detail does not make it less cool at all tho =P

I feel the same way. With some colors it reminds me of those plasma balls you see in specialty shops. On other colors it reminds me of water waves reflecting on the bottom of a pool.

Nicely done, Moth. I agree with Slime about the bevel, but you`ve used the plasma thing well.

Oooh water! Good work on fixing the matte.

Here's an update.

Moth: I couldn't see it that well, this monitor that I'm using has really bad gamma settings. With the softer bevel on the one above, it makes it look fuzzy and a bit blury.

Moon Shadow, that's fantastic. An interesting twist on the idea. Would you mind posting a version with more frames in the tween? I'm curious what your sig would look like slowed down.

I like the banded patterns in the last one Moth. Very moth-ish.

I'm glad you like the experiment. I chose less colors and no dithering in the optimization to cause the banding. I used the same technique with the plasma sword but it didn't work as well.

I like what you've got going on in the globe but your name needs work. It's too dark and small.

Any Better ?? I think I prefer these to the other one ... I tried for the "real" plasma ball effect ... a bit staccato, but getting there ...

I think you are on the right track. The lightning seems a little off, like its not moving right. The plasma behind the lightning is beautiful.
