Anyone want to give me some sort of heads up for this? Should I be looking to close some of the threads that this troll has been spewing his garbage in?

Also, I have some information on the IP Address, but I suppose it's personal and I shouldn't post that. Or maybe I should. Emps, wanna give me a heads up? You have pretty good judgement.

Jestah: Send the IP info to the Doc. I'm going to close the threads as we have the IP and so there isn't much point in leaving it open - they are doing it for the attention so starve the flame. I've also removed some unpleasantness as we don't need that around here. Just my take on it though.

Well I sent the Doc information that I was able to find from searching different IP searches. I don't know exactly how the Doc is going to handle this situation, as you know he has sort of an informal no banning policy here, although this is a bit different. The address is to a school of some sort in the state of Washington. If the Doc was to block the IP address, anyone from that school would be unable to visit this forum, so I would imagine the Doc is going to take this into consideration. If it does come down to banning, I would imagine the Doc would need some sort of proof of malicious activity.

Of course it's also offensive, so your call is good enough for me

Jestah: Cool. If anyone really needs to know what was in those threads I can always tell them (drop me a line).

Its a pity it was a school as it might make things a little more difficult to track down although they might also keep quite detailed logs of user activity (however, if they had any sense they'd have got around those precautions - another reason not to give too much help to people trying to hack their school computers!!) and if they can prove someone did make those posts I can't imagine the school would look kindly on that kind of thing.

Well Emps, after reading a few of the threads before you got to them its perfectly clear that they had no value. My only reasons for keeping them would be for some sort of proof, but I suppose the Doc isn't out to have someone held accountable as much as he is restoring the peace. In all honesty, I think the Doc should suspend his no ban policy in this situation. Every now and then a jerk comes to the community, but this is ridiculous. The members of this forum shouldn't have to deal with it, nor should the mad sci's need to jump around to 'contain' this bafoon.

IMO, ban the school.

Hmmm...I'm not supporting any trolls who may be here, becuase the trolls we ahve seen so far have all posted some major racist bulsiht, but I feel I must say something. Does anyone here remember MY first day on the board? I certainly do. As far as I can see (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), TN1 was being accused of being a troll due to his high number of posts on his first day as an inmate. In my first day as an Asylum member, I posted close to the number TN1 had when I emerged from my cell this evening for my nightly prowl. I don't recall the word troll being banndied about or branded onto me then, and I don't think it's fairthat it's being done now.

So someone has seen somewhere that they like and has managed to find lots of topics that they'd like to post in and has questions they want to ask. So what? I know it's customary around here to post one topic saying hello on your first day and leave it at that, but just becuase someone breaks with tradition, that doesn't make them the enemy.

If we hadn't had out recent troubles with BSS and Ozoneleader__hi, would the thought of 'troll' even have popped to mind when we saw TN1's post count?

The quick answer: no

The longer answer: no, becuase the recent events and our recent problems with rippers and trolls have whipped us up into a frnezy (even if we don't outwardly show it) and now that our suspicions have been aroused, we're seeing potential trolls everywhere. I must admit that even I have seen trolls at every turn, but I took some time off from the asylum (a few hours, but that did me) to calm down so that I could look at the issue more clearly and tkae my responsibilities as an administrator more seriously. yoda had it right: anger clouds your judgment. Take osme time off, create something, cool down and come back here ready to tackle this problem in a more rational manner. And as I've said before...when you come here, leave your prejudices and suspicions at the door.

Skaarjj: I really don't think it has anything to do with the posting rate (more the content and manner) and we should be clear also that TN_1 was displaying troll-like behaviour which doesn't mean that they are THE troll (who is responsible for the recent racist posts) or even that they are A troll but if you are green, smell, hide under bridges and scare billy goats gruff then people will start talking. I've seen similar things happen before (and of course the classic case where someone's first post is a recommendation of a product - classic troll behaviour but it often turns out that people aren't trolls at all) and things are often resolved by people pointing out that they are acting in a troll-like manner - the fact that TN_1 has gone quiet, as they were asked to, while cb gives the details to the Doc, is a good sign. We've overcome worse and accepted people into the Asylum

Just my perspective on things (and there are a million different ones here - taking into account Wakkos' multiple presonalities).

[edit: I think Skaarjj's broader point is another good one we'd be well advised to take on board. Recent events have made us jumpy and we should try not to jump on people accussing them of wrongdoing until we have good evidence]

Skaarjj- I must admit I did feel a little guilty tightening the straps on TN1's straight jacket. It wasn't so much the speed at which he posted, but more of what he posted and how he came to this wonderland. He didn't find the portal through the looking glass like the rest of us, he followed his friends who participated in troll like activities. He started his first post pertaining to not wanting racist comments or something to that extent. I'd be the first to appologozie if we were wrong, as with Eyeballdesigns, but in this case I just don't think we are and look to the Doc to sort things out.

This is why logging IPs is a good thing.

Well I've been talking to CF and he seems to understand the trouble that was caused by him and his friends and is genuinely sorry for it. I don't think banning anyone else is necessary. We have the IP log, if more problems occur then we can take further action. For the time being we should welcome them to the Asylum and offer them a straight jacket.

1) I didn't have an opening thread, I just jumped in answering some threads I knew the answer to and the later got the cojones to ask a question in my very own thread (ooooo, the novelty). I remember being shocked the day neofrog first posted his 'Hello, World!' thread... I personally don't like the concept of a 'coming-out' party... I rather your posts get you noticed for their quality in context.

2) I don't think any of this is necessary. Didn't like the thread/post/comment in question? Ignore it- or, if it bugs you *that* much, write ONE comment post and move on. I considered closing the car wreck joke thread- a lot of stupid things were said- but it's better to just walk away...
