InI - As far as the closing or deletion of threads are concerned I generally let things run their course. If a topic is growing long but its still active, I usually wait to close it and create a new one. Usually, a member will realize its getting long and create a second thread. To avoid confusion I'll close the original thread and direct traffic to the new one. In cases of utter nonsense - not really related to Philosophy - such as flame wars and Zigot_Bahn's posts, I tend to close them. I also lean towards deletion. I don't believe we should waste Doc's bandwith with these posts.

I try to respect what other moderators do. If someone closes a thread I tend to leave it closed and so forth.

as far as closing threads goes IMHO I think that if a thread is malicious or if several of the other inmates are offended by the content then we as moderators should move to close it...I'm all for freedom of speech until people start getting hurt...so to speak...

we should remind ourselves that closing a thread is no big deal.
It can always be opened up again, if other MS feel otherwise.
Offensive threads should probbaly not be deleted without serveral ms capturing evidence, but move them to MS lab, at least.

Oh, and if a thread is closed with 'moved to XXX', I usually delete them after 48 hours...

My thought has always been, like TP's, that if a thread is closed that should not have been, there are plenty of people around who can reopen it.

Checks and balances.

Doc was pretty smart to choose such a varied group to be his moderators. . .

However, I think it is imperative that personal emotion not be the reason that a person chooses to close a thread.

Getting in an argument, and then deciding that you don't wish to continue the argument is *not* an acceptable reason to close a thread, IMO.

If you have the urge to close a thread based on such issues, then it is best to leave it be or refer it to someone else for a clearer perspective.

If you're involved in a heated debate its probably better to leave it to another moderator to close. You can hit us up on Q or email if you have a problem.

Then there's also the choice not to click the link to enter a thread. If you know that stuff is going on inside a thread that's going to tick you off, why not just avoid the thread altogether? Let it run its course and someone else will close/archive/delete it.

I'm not sure that I actually approved anything - I asked for clarification as I wasn't sure what was going on. The fact that I received none might be taken as a sign of...... something.

The case refered to in the first thread is different - the thread was moved and to avoid confusion a locked copy was left in the original forum saying it is being moved (its something I do a lot ofter complaints - although I also get complaints about leaving a copy behind when we move things so you really can't win). Reopening the original threa when the discussion is continuing in the moved version is bound to create confusion and should be avoided.

The New Asylum will contain a whole range of features that should make our life easier when it comes to things like the latter issue.

I dunno... I'm generally against closing any thread unless something truely stupid is going on such as spam or serial numbers or such, but generally the thread wouldn't pop up top if people weren't replying to it... and if peope are replying to it.. let it be...

it'll sink when it loses it's appeal... until then... leave it alone..

other than that, I usually just leave closed threads closed unless good info is being put out... no use for infighting between us... the great bulk of these threads are unimportant either way.. leave 'em be...

This happened to me. I don't close threads anymore, that I am personally involved in. Either let another do it, or leave it open. Eventually, as is with all threads, it will die...and then can be closed, deleted, archived, whatever...

Not that I have actively done such, in awhile...
