There was some talk of this being a possibility in the first couple of threads on this subject here and the Internet Movie Project has developed a render farm to help with the rending of 3D scenes (from POV Ray):
http://www.imp.org/members/render/default.asp

The only problem is I can't get much more info as you need to supply a username and password.

Just thought I'd pass it on - anyone know anything else about this?

Looks like they really don't have it running yet. Might be interesting when they get it going.. POV Ray is capable of creating stunning 3D work but I never had the time/patience to learn it properly. Yea, a movie rendered w/POV Ray would require some serious cpu horsepower. Wonder if their program will allow you to see the work you've rendered somehow? Bookmarked it for now, will check back from time to time.

I just asked them for a username and password. They wil probably say no, but it never hurts to ask.

Red Ninja: Cool - let us know how it goes. Some of the guys over in the 3D graphics forum do some serious processing and it would be interesting if the Asylum could somehow provide some extra grunt on interesting projects.

Emperor (kneels before throne)

All I had to do was ask for it, and lo! it has been bequeathed.

I just got it today.

They sent me a group email with the username and password. We all have the same username and password. I don't know if they gave it to me because I gave them a guilt trip about being a web designer who is attending film school and the others gave a likely account of themselves, or if they just give it to anyone that asks. Either way, it doesn't matter... they didn't swear me to secrecy. The simple fact that they sent out a blanket email tells me that they can't trace who it was that had given out the usernames and passwords, so I have no qualms about posting it here.

User id: moviegroup
Password: moviestar

Unless you people testify otherwise, which I hope you do not, all evidence against me is circumstantial. Protect your sources.

Or you can just ask them for a password yourselves.

Here's what's up. As part of the group, you are able to complete certain tasks needed for the "movie" using POV-ray. Everyone contributes, no one gets paid.

It is, essentially, an experiment to see of they can use a medium like the internet to cause a whole lot of people to contribute to one large thing. //I'm sure you guys know this, but it is provided here for the people who are too lazy to look for themselves.

I'm not sure where they want to go with it after that, but if you guys are smart enough to find this page and create a profile, I'm sure you can handle looking through some info.

Anyway, you can ask to be part of the mailing list. I don't know if they assign a task as soon as they know your name and email, or if you have to ask for one. I would encourage any of Ozone's guys to come on board with this. It would be good to get the Asylum's name out a little.

I'm spent.

Red Ninja: You may rise now. Thanks for information (now go and hide).

IMP: Welcome. Thanks for stopping in - its an interesting project and I'm sure we'll come up with some questions for you. I'm curious to know how you are going to go about this. Do people download the software which would distribute the processing or will you just give everyone an individual .pov file that they can rend?

Okay! It took a little longer than I thought, but I have finished the windows render client. I am tweaking the server portion and updating the documentation. Check out http://www.imp.org/members/render/default.asp for details

Later
Tom

It may be ported to mac or it may not. Depends if a mac person takes on the task of porting. I know the *nix folks are currently porting it over now.
