Topic awaiting preservation: The Good/Evil Scale

In this world there are degrees of evil and good that every one lies in. Many people are in the middle area. The Grey area, a place where good and evil merge and become distorted. On this scale there are some notable people.

Take forinstance all the people around here who have the word "Dark" in their nickname. You arent truly evil. You have no evil in you, so why would you try and be something your not.

For those who are truly evil like Hitler, Osama, Stalin and Phnom Penh they dont ever reach into true evil. True evil is a state that can never be reached for that would be perfection. Since no one is perfect, it can't be true.

I dip into evil some times but only in a mild form. I do get some laughs out of the pain of others. I will laugh at a little kid who becomes emotionly scarred after witnessing the hanging of a child icon like Ronald McDonald or Barney.

For those who are good it comes close but not quite. Many of your Catholic saints of past years did have some good to them like Mother Teresa or St Nicholaus, yes he was real. Good comes easier than evil. You can get more satisfaction for doing good than from doing evil. People like Bill Gates are good people.


A Human can never get close to true evil since there will always be opposition from the good side. This is why the saying

"Good triumphs over Evil" came about.

"good comes easier than evil" What??? Since when? I think it's the exact opposite. Sure more satisfaction comes from doing good but it takes far more effort to do good than evil. I believe most people opt for the path of least resistance.

You can't say these people are evil, because they're not. What is evil? Who defines what evil is? It's all one big question that can't really be answered. You can't really label anything as "evil".

When I was a younger more reckless lad I beat someone into ICU for bumping into me and not apologizing, he ended up with 147 stiches on his face/head...Evil? How about this, I once smashed a guys foot and arm in his car door so many times as I beat on him that he ended up loosing his foot. Evil? yea or nay? Am I Evil? I got more but the statute of limitations dosent run out on some things....it comes down to the definition of evil.

Now as a much more mellow fellow I dont think of myself as an evil person evil but I would kill any one of you where you stood if you placed myself or my family in the emminent threat of serious bodily injury or death, as I suspect most people would. Even now I find it hard to leash my more destructive urges but thats my life as a closet sociopath.

One thing all the people in common on that list have is that if you sat down and asked them if they were evil they wouldnt think so. You listed psychopaths, they simply dont know the difference. I would say "Evil" is when people choose to do wrong, know its wrong and relish in the fact that its wrong...its all about intent.

So. If I choose to do evil for the sheer pleasure of it am I more or less evil than a true-believer who kills thousands in a fanatical quest and dosent see what s/he did is 'evil'? Does the magnitude of the act change the 'evilness' of it?

Who decides what evil is? I would venture that its certainly not any of us...or even society.

First of all, there is no good or evil...it's just a matter of perspective...

But if you insist that there is, then consider this...I helped kill hundreds of thousands in the Gulf War...am I, then, evil according to you? How about to those families that lost love ones because of my actions? Do you really think I could walk around in Iraq (if it was known what I did in the war) without fear?

Moaiz! I have a couple of similar stories from ym youth, maybe one day when we're sitting around I'll tell some of those stories again. You're not evil, you just apparently have one hell of a temper, now somewhat under more control? Violent emotions of any sort can be twisted into something useful in your life, they're a source of power.

I agree, Psychopaths and Sociopaths can never be truly evil - "evil" implies some kind of concious choice, based on the undertsanding of which is which; good versus evil. I'd imagine that every historical figure the world calls "evil" probably didn't think of themselves that way, they were most likely convinced that their actions were necessary to the greater good somehow.

Occasionally I do evil, I'll cause someone hurt even though I know it's not really a good thing to do, but mainly cause they annoyed me! Frequently I'll do good, but even then I look at myself and realize that there are selfish motivations behind them too! Are those good deeds "tainted" somehow, because doing them made me feel good too?

I live not in a grey world, but in a fine pen & ink world. It may *appear* grey, but when you get close you see it's just a cross-hatch of black and white, no grey at all. And, the black is not 100% black, and the white, well, it's more of a cream coloured.

Labeling a person entirely evil is a stretch. But I think we *all* do, and have done, evil. A more interesting question might be what's the difference between someone who does massive evil like Stalin and someone who does minimal evil like Mother Teresa?

I think both evil and good are incorrect words. They should be called dark energy and light energy, which are both actually composed of light energy, so really there is no difference, and also I may be wrong. But I totally agree with moaiz here. And Webshaman. But it seems to me that the only true societal evil would be killing a human. So, therefor, Webshaman, though you were only doing your job, what you did and the job you choose may anger god, if he/she/it even exists. But more than likely, you were actually doing the work of God, because if there is a God, he/she/it is on both sides, and the battles and wars we fight are for a much greater picture that we as humans could never understand. So basically what this boils down to is that if you feel in your heart that what you are doing is wrong, stop doing it. God has his warriors, do not be one if you do not think you are one. And personally I think if anyone has gotten into a fight, and has seen the slow-motion, and been able to beat up anyone they fight, then they are warriors, and it seems we warriors are often sort of smart.

As to whether or not 'killing' makes one a warrior...I have to disagree. Ghandi was more a warrior than anything else (though as wise-man he comes close...) and didn't kill anyone...that is the ultimate goal of the true warrior...to defeat your enemies without killing them...and turning them from enemies into friends...

*sadly shakes head* When will the world realize this...?

Bugimus - Yea, I am full of contridictions. How else can we learn if we don't question everything? But I still think it is wrong, maybe not necessarily evil, to kill another thing unless you need that thing to eat, or to wear as clothes, plants included.

Insider - I tend to look at hell not as reality, but as percieved realities. Like, how some people are always constantly worried what is going to happen in the future. For example, well what if I ask her out for a date, and she says no, and then we never talk again, and I am humilated. Whereas reality, everything else but hell, would be deciding to ask her out, never questioning the possible outcomes, and then asking her. I think people create their own hells by either analyzing false realities that could occur in the future, or by analyzing what someone from the past meant by something. I mean ask someone what they meant if they say something that bothers you, do not sit their and analzye it all the time. Insider, I do not mean that you do this, this is just sort of a general thing i have noticed with a lot of people. Always complaining about what if's or what could of beens, and never living in the real reality of the now. i think this living in false realities is hell, but maybe not.

Eh, it's really not all that interesting... I just happen to translate for US concerns, but I live in Korea and translate for Korean concerns as well. My friends all know about my love for Asia, and they are convinced that I am a double agent... they're just not sure who I'm really working for. I also happen to really like mystery, intrigue, etc., and the double agent thing just fit me to a T. One of those inside joke things, I guess...

Hmmm...starting to sound interesting...maybe I'll call up some old friends, and do a little 'research'...
