Was thinking about something that Emps posted...where some 'thinkers' have predicted certain things happening in the future...and considering the fact that there are plenty of 'thinkers' here, decided to start the Official Asylum Think Tank Project...so without further delay...

This year - a working Gene Therapy will be available...
by 2005 - the internet goes 3D!!!
by 2010 - marriage will cease to be a recognized bond between two people (legally)
by 2020 - Mars will be colonized (and not a minute too soon...because the ice caps have melted...)

So 'bring out your lists'!

2006 - Korea wins World Cup; German suicide rate reaches highest in history
2010 - Science fiction writers forced to come up with new dystopias after robots fail miserably in attempt to take over world

That's as far as I can see now; my crystal ball is on the fritz.

2005 - Electromagnetic energy replaces Oil and Gasoline.
2012 - World peace declared as all terrorists are either dead, or have decided to stop killing people
2016 - Aliens meet with the New World President, who will be a woman, and they welcome us into the Inter-Galactic Federation
2022 - Everyone becomes aware of their spiritual nature, and all religions are viewed as what they really are, helpful stories to guide us.

Or:

September 11th, 2002: Terrorists launch massive attack on US. US strikes back. We kill lots of people, piss of China, they nuke us, we nuke them, everyone nukes everyone else.

2005 - My wife finally manages to get to work on time for a whole month straight.

2007 - Canada puts the finishing touches on it's bid to takeover the United States. They cunningly completed their infiltration of the American media industry, making use of its vast potential to affect the hearts and minds of the American public.

2014 - Room temperature superconductivity is finally achieved, revolutionizing the whole concept of energy usage worldwide. There was now no limit to the size of microwavable popcorn packages.

2020 - The invention of the first affordable teleportation device wreaks havoc on the already fragile family dynamics, as the concept of grounding became superfluous.

2022 - Plastic Skin is invented. A maleable replacement for human skin, this product was developed with the support and funding of Michael Jackson and Cher, and was given a leg up with funds donated from the estate of the late Phyllis Diller. The company, Maleability Inc., is now working on a completely functional replacemnt body into which the mind can be transplanted.

2004 : New medicines will be able to cure more, faster, and be available much wider than now. Of course, no one goes to think that not being able to get "motivated" (wink wink, nudge nudge) or have hair on your head isn't really a sickness, but it doesn't stop the new drugs from coming out and taking storm.

2005 : Gasoline begins to go up in price, people begin to become irrate at the gas station attendents, national breakdown of language... we all begin to grunt at one another. Surprisingly, it works ten times better than our current system (which is just nicer sounding grunts).

2008 : Oil countries, Kuwait and whatnot, have their limelight stolen as their reserves begin to drastically dry up, causing a slight panic. New movies come out. I go see them. I laugh/cry/sneer at them. And buy popcorn (which has gone up to about $90 a box by this time.)

2013 : Scientists in Japan build the first completely transportable, continuous power source, and fit a few of them into cars. They find that not only is speed and preformance improved, but you never need to have it filled with gas (running at about $20 a gallon by this time... ok, slight overshot. More like $18) nor do you have to worry about all them greasy parts under the hood! It's sparkly clean, Martha Stewart would be proud.

2014 : Ford's executives have these scientists killed, research destroyed.

2030 : Having become absolete by this time, Football (American, mind you... grid iron... tackles... fullbacks... 49'ers... you know what I'm talking about) fades away and soccer reigns supreme world wide. It is hailed as the world's sport, and there is much rejoicing.

It's... it's.... fading...

... gone ...

2003 - Tabloid papers fire psychics, hire Asylum to do yearly end-of-year predictions.
2015 - Petrol is very expensive. Urban sprawl will reverse itself as people will not afford the transportation costs.
2020 - Computers will be a new 'species'...with the ability to reproduce, evolve, etc. outside the direct influence of people.
2025 - Petrol becomes extremely scarce, major companies excellerate research of 'alternative' fuel sources.
2050 - Petrol becomes essentially a thing of the past. Regular people use solar, wind, hydro, etc. power for most everyday energy needs. Private companies and corporations begin wide-spread use of nuclear power for large energy needs (factories, transport boats, large jets)
2060 - Most major corporations have learned how to build nuclear weapons from their new energy sources.
2075 - The nation-state as a geo-political force becomes, essentially, a thing of the past. People will become 'citizens' of corporations and/or trade unions.

2004 - The C.I.A. will lose most of its intelligence consumers due to a major boost in information technology, and they will start focusing more on human intelligence like they did during the cold war and get themselves in trouble again like they did after the Colby congressional hearings.

2005 - Computer chips begin to go completely molecular, opening new doors for genomics researchers including improved memory capacity, automatic glandular stimulation (it's said that the aging process really begins when a certain gland stops producing. Can't remember which one), and real time vital reports that might be connected to hospitals and stuff for older people. No more, "I've fallen and I can't get up!".

2006 - The Internet 2 finally starts getting popular and real-time holographic conferences and virtual cafe's (and bordellos?) will become the new trend, possibly stimulating a new wave in global trade.

2025 - The art of ionic propulsion is mastered, enabling space craft to go virtually anywhere without having to refuel.

2075 - Electronic cars are FINALLY mainstream, and the Tickle me Elmo doll makes an eerie and unexpected comeback.

That soon, you think? What about information in translation? I don't care what sort of boost you get in information technology, the information is no good if you can't read it, right?

Skaarjj: That's why it would be eerie and unexpected. Elmo certainly wouldn't be forgotten, just.. ignored.

Suho: That's a good point, but it's already starting to happen. Fact is, due to the massive success of the internet, the CIA has been taking all this information and compiling it into an easy to understand package of information relavent to the consumer's request. Perhaps in 2004, translation technology will be improved (supporting what you said) which will take away some of the business the CIA conducts. In addition, the CIA will be pretty busy by then helping the new homeland security organization, as the new program is second to the Department of Defense so it's going to be processing the of all the other US intelligence organizations at once. In effect, this would demand more human intelligence accross the big drink.

Well, translation technology may improve, but I don't think it will improve to the point that computers will replace translators (at least not for quite a while). Translation is not just "moving" ideas from one language to another (I say "moving" because that's a Korean colloquialism for "translating," and it's the way a lot of people view translation)--translation is a creative process. Yes, they may improve translation software to the point where you can get reasonable rough translations from a computer, but you would still need an editor for those, and a lot of the material the CIA deals with would still require the human touch. As for translation technology being so improved by 2004 as to bring about a significant reduction in the workload, I just don't see that happening. Just my opinion, of course, and I may be proven wrong--but I hope not.

I do agree that the CIA will probably be busier with homeland security, but I think that will mean an increase in CIA resources, rather than merely a reappropriation of existing resources. Given the state of the world today, I don't think the US government is going to want to stretch the CIA too thin...

I love working on this stuff. It helps me to collect my thoughts in preperation for the sci-fi novels that I write. Basically, my ideas of the future are seperated into different categories, so don't fret too much.

Political

2003 - US President George W. Bush declares war on Iraq. While there is international uproar over the incident, and 4 million people are killed, Saddam Hussein is ousted from power permanently (with thanks going towards a US cruise missile for doing the job), and all Iraqi weapons of mass destruction are disarmed. The war, which lasts only a month, results in 2 years of rebuilding the shattered country. Unfortunately, such a happy ending cannot be said for the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, where Palestinian militants continue to wage guerilla warfare on Israel's army.

2005 - The US election goes well for George W. Bush, beating Senator Henry Jackson by 281 votes. He announces that, with the death of terrorist Osama bin Laden in the previous year, and the remaining al-Qaeda cell members, more effort can be spent in bringing peace to the Middle East.

2008 - Bush attempts to introduce a bill allowing US presidents to serve a maximum 12 years. The bill is not passed.

2009 - Senator Michael Thomas Winslow is elected President of the US. He promises more money towards addressing the larger issues, such as environmental problems and the AIDS pandemic. He is labeled by Time magazine as "Man of the Year" in 2010 because of his social and patient style of politics.

2012 - Palestinian militant Yasser Arafat dies after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. After a long and bloody battle at Arafat's Ramallah compound, the last remnants of his Fatah faction are taken into Israeli custody.

2013 - US President Michael T. Winslow wins the election after reentering America into the Kyoto protocol. His win is one of the highest percentages on record, with nearly 90% of Americans voting for him. Also that year, a peace deal is settled in Israel, with the land being divided equally among the two countries. While several small Palestinian groups disagree with the split up. resulting in street protests, the UN-designed plan generally is agreed on by everyone.

I will finish the rest of this another day.

The same US populous who continuously votes in candidates that bring the most pork to their communities realizes the national debt (which obviously never needs to be paid off) gives us a bottomless pit of money to draw from and DEMANDS an end to income taxes, as there is no need for them.

2014:
