Beatles Abbey Road cigarette airbrushed

What do you think of this move? Is it acceptable to change something like this for a "worthy" cause?

Chalk up another one for the PC pushers... this is a sad, sad day I tell ya. My father, an avid Beatles fan since childhood, absolutely flipped over this article. Just... *shakes head*

Rewriting history to reflect current standards or beliefs is simply unacceptable.

Wes,

That was very well said...I agree whole-heartedly.

What worthy cause would that be?

Denying that people ever smoked cigarettes?
Denying that someone who used to smoke a lot just died of the cancer it caused him?

I fail to see how that in any way helps any cause. And furthermore, even if it did, it's still completely unacceptable, as Wes so eloquently stated.

Get to use it again. "Assholes do vex me!" We'll just airbrush these bodies out of the death camps and nobody will ever know.

I sometimes really do wonder what goes through peoples heads. I'd love to hear a tape of the entire dialogue that lead to the decision.

On the positive side I guess if you have an 'original' its value has just increased. =)

Well I suppose the important thing is:

quote:
The move was made without the permission of either McCartney or Apple Records, which owns the rights to the image.

If the owners of the image had given it the thumbs up then that is a whole different thing (I suspect Paul McCartney should request a little PS touch up of that awful photo or pos. provide some better ones to the press ). but that makes it just wrong in so many ways.

And that is 'interesting':

quote:
A myth suggesting that Paul McCartney had died in a car crash and been replaced by a look-a-like grew up around the picture soon after it was released.

Clues could supposedly be found in the image.

The white-suited John Lennon symbolised the preacher heading the funeral procession, while the bare-footed McCartney was the corpse.

According to the rumours, proof positive of the impostor theory was the fact that Paul was holding a cigarette in his right hand, despite being left-handed.

Perhaps it is all part of the ongoing conspiracy

Couldn't have put it better myself, Wes.

In fact, I'd probably just describe it as complete and utter bullshit.

What worthy cause would that be?

The anti-smoking lobby believes that removing things from society that they believe cause people to start smoking is a worthy cause. And in the name of that cause, they have subjugated truth. They have done it prior to this poster and you can hear and see the public service announcements on almost all of our media here in the US.

I hate smoking and I wish no one smoked, but I love truth *far* more than any hatred. The commercials against second-hand smoke have been using questionable, if not outright false, statistics for years now. It is sad to see how people can get fanatical about something like this and lose all perspective on life in general. Sure smoking sucks, but there are worse things! We have to keep the rhetoric consistent with the threat.

By this same token, should we digitally remove all instances of Sherlock Holmes smoking? etc. etc. etc. ~sigh~
