Just wanted to ask our American fellows what they thought of that (I don't think this type of show is actullay broadcasted in Europe... At least it is not broadcasted at all in France).

I personally believe the majority of televangelists are the quacks of the Church in the US. People who fall victim to these people almost deserve to lose their money to them, if they're stupid enough to send it in the first place! It pains me to watch those shows... Even if it's only a click in between 2 channels. ick.

Notice, I did say most... I haven't seen it yet, but the possibility exists that there could be a completely honest televangelist out there somewhere... If someone comes across that person, let me know. I'm curious...

yeah, even as a xian the purple-haired lady freaks me out a bit the thing is, from what i've read about some of them (like the purple-haired lady and her husband on tbn for example) they do really do a TON of outreach/community service/donation kinda stuff which i think is awesome. i think it comes down to the particular individual watching, everyone has a certain style that appeals to them and apparently there's a significant population that that appeals to.

i go to a rather large church that's actually on tv a few times a week, both our services and some discussions and interviews with our pastor and his wife are broadcast. when we started doing that he let it be known that he would never ask for any kind of donation on tv because of the negative reputations of televangelists (and because we didn't put the service on tv to make money). definitely a guy with some integrity that i have a lot of respect for.

The guy with the burnt face freaks me out. I'm not sure if you guys have seen him, but it really freaks me out. Especially on those late nights when I have been hanging out with the peace pipe....

if you're talking about dave roever, which you probably are, i've actually met and chatted with the guy (he was burned over a large percentage of his body by i think a phosphorous grenade when he was in special ops in vietnam). he is definitely strange-looking, but has an absolutely amazing story, is an incredibly sweet guy, and is also extremely sarcastic and quick when he speaks to groups, really entertaining.

(he's not a televangelist btw, just happens to come on some shows as a guest from time to time)

Many such as Pat Robertson, are mixing politics and religion pushing their agendas on others... They are really stretching the 'separation of church and state".
Many are just phonies.....with remarks such as "God told me to buy a satellite" (at your expense though) hehe Both Pat Robertson and Jerry Fallwell blamed gays and abortion as the reason we were attacked on 9-11.

For the most part, I cringe when I see them. Many of them, probably most, are charlatans and some of them have been proven to be such.

I'm thinking primarily of the "faith healer" variety right now. A few years ago, one of them was caught getting a radio feed from his staff as he pretended to hear from God about details of the audience's problems. The staff had mingled with the audience prior to the service and gathered juicy info to tell the faith healer.

There are evangelists on TV that are not charlatans too. They do a wonderful job and there is nothing wrong with asking for donations in those cases. The bottom line is that there needs to be accountability and you should *never* send money to any organization that you haven't checked out first.

Fig - I'm sure he is real nice and all, it's just when you are flipping through the channels it can be quite a surpise. also, I know he had his own show for a while, at least in Texas, because he was on the religious channel all the time.

I think it's like anything else. There are bad apples mixed with the good. I personally love Joyce Meyer. I've read several of her books and watch her often.

Well, I'm happy to say that they don't have any on TV here in Germany...

Why is that?

Because I just don't like watching stuff like that...Iknow, I know, I don't have too...but still...I don't think it really belongs on TV. I have a very large amount of distrust in TV Evangelism...

If someone really feels that they believe, then why advertise it? And why on TV? Why ask for money? Anytime someone who professes to believe, asks for money, my suspicions go up...as to the intent.

Or did you mean, why doesn't Germany have it? I don't know...could have something to do with the laws here...I'm not sure.

A lot of them have a huge church and do TV to reach shut ins (elderly and stuff) and to reach people that don't attend church. They ask for donations to help cover the TV cost. However, some as I said before, are just crooks. It's like anything else. There's good mixed with some bad. However, I do understand why people have red flags go up. For me it's discernment.

I disagree with playing on someone's spiritual beliefs in order to acheive personal prosperity, however, asking for donations to support a genuine television ministry is different. As long as the funds can be proven to be going into the operation of the ministry and it's associated charities. I'm all for auditing of those sorts of things. Too many crooks in the world. Anyone remember Tammy and Whatshisname Baker? *shudder*

We discussed faith healers and channelers in this class I took last semester, the majority of people "healed" in those things are only experiencing the effects of adrenelin and endorphins during the service, but later on, generally suffer worse, and sometimes die because of the exertion demanded on the show. Faith healers never follow up with their "patients"... When debunkers follow up with those people, they are rarely ever "healed"...

The current "fav" channeler is James van Praagh - anyone ever catch him on TV in the late night? He uses the same ol' tricks as any of them... but people still believe he's talking to their dead relatives... I suppose the fact that people continue to believe in that sort of crap is the main reason these people have any sort of success, but I just have to shake my head...

Red flags *should* automatically go up. That is more than appropriate and that is why you should only give to organizations that voluntarily publish and submit their financial statements to watchdog organizations. All the reputable one will supply this info and it is the responsibility of the giver to give *responsibly*.

I am not familiar with James van Praagh, but I have watched "faith healers" for many years and am well aware of their tactics. God will be their judge for what they are doing.
