I would actually like to join you two. I think a lot of them need a good bitch slap... especially the ones who take up two parking spots that make me have to park further out than I have to!!! Not to mention the BMW owners who park right up in front in two spots because they can't have their car nicked by any of us common vehicle owners.

One of the main reasons, that Germany is having economic problems, is that it is caught between a rock and a hard place...on one hand, is the taxation system in Germany, which is bleeding the country dry of growth...and the EU directives, which give penalties when they are not met. Mr. Schoeder and the SPD are having a very difficult time of finding a way through this. Normally, in times like these, one would sink the taxation...but that would mean penalties from the EU...massive ones (Germany has already been reprimanded). Also, the CDU is blocking just about everything helpful, because they hope to capitalize on the failure of the SPD to solve these problems...politics as usual. I largely suspect, that things will get much, much worse in Germany, before they get better...that, combined with the rather passive German folk (who seem to accept just about anything and everything, without at least protesting it)...and one can see, that solving the current problems will not be an easy task.

As for SUVs, I can't understand, for the life in me, why they even exist. What purpose can they possibly serve, other than one of status, and luxury? Here in Europe, one just doesn't see much of this kind of attitude...but then, gas prices are pretty damn high here...

One thing that really bothers the hell out of me - American cars here in Europe get much better MPG than in America...WTF? It's the same companies (Ford, GM. DaimlerChrysler), so why isn't the technology being spread out? Why does a Ford built here in Germany, get better MPG than in America? I don't understand this...can anyone explain this to me? In fact, as an American, it really pisses me off...

And let's talk about other types of fuel...like bio-diesel and natural gas...why can I get bio-diesel here in Germany? And why can I get natural gas in Australia? Where are these types of alternatives in America? I can drive up to the pumps, and lo and behold, bio-diesel...and it's pretty cheap, actually.

In Australia, natural gas.

With things like that in mind, why the hell are there SUVs in America, that suck gas like...[analogy deleted due to sensitivities]? Just doesn't make any sense to me, whatsoever.

I hate them in traffic..you can't see over them or around them...and most of the people who drive them have this "finger" attitude. If you are unlucky enough to be in an accident with one....you die.....if there is dieing going on.

One reason for SUVs: Fun... if you like to be able to go through giant mud puddles and cake your car in Mud, sometimes SUVs/jeeps/trucks are a necessity.... it really is fun....

2 - carrying large/expensive items on a frequent basis ... sometimes trucks cant cut it.

3 - to roll over old people

4 - please note: all SUV's aren't V8.. there are plenty of sports cars with V8's... and lots more with V6's.. 4 cylinder engines just aren't that common as much anymore.... especially for sports cars...

5 - room issues.... have you ever even ridden in the back of a VW Beetle.. 30+ MPG... but you come out of the damn thing with your foot where the sun hasn't shined since that weekend in college....

6 - weather conditions... sometimes its just much safer....

7 - running over old people

8 - being a rapper

9 - running over old people who used to be rappers

You guys want a gas guzzler? Try a 93 Chevy Caprice Sedan LS with a 25 gallon gastank that get about 12 miles to the gallon. THAT'S MY CAR! ... and it is not an SUV. Yet, I think jesus would drive it... it was a bit authoritative. Used to have that car for Police Cars. Big muscle, but luxury and sexy. Funny thing is when I come up on someone, they usually get out of the way. hehehe.

Suho, don't ask me why but your post made me wonder had Jesus come the first time when there were the automobiles of today, instead of riding that donkey into the Holy City, what car would He have chosen?

MW,

While it is true that the free market does not automatically protect the environment, it is also true that it does not automatically harm it. There are times when it is profitable to be environment friendly, for instance, when most of your customers are willing to pay higher prices for products made more responsibly. Since I don't think the government is the *only* resort, I maintain that it should be the last resort. Where there is no alternative, we have no argument on that point.

I would like to bring your attention to a private organization that protects the environment working *with* our capitalist system. The Nature Conservancy is a model for how I believe we should proceed. The extremist organizations do little but turn people off to conservation by their constant preaching and condemnations. Take a look at their site to get an idea of how much lasting conservation can be achieved working with the system rather than trying to tear it down. I truly believe we need to live in harmony with our environment *and* progress with science and technology to continue to move toward a much better world for all peoples.

I was not suggesting that we drop all protective laws. I just want to minimize the amount of regulation so that we don't slow economic growth so much that we shoot ourselves in the foot. I think it is a matter of how much we regulate rather than not regulating at all. In the case of SUVs I don't believe the government has any need to intervene but I will acknowledge there are other cases where it should.

No socialism in Europe??? Ummm... then what do you have in Europe? I guess I needed to be more precise. The capitalist systems in Europe are far more socialist in structure than ours here in the US. Would you agree with that description?
