Do a search on the bible for every verse that describes how to be blessed and that describes specific cases of how to be happy in this world. The definition of blessed I mean is "to confer prosperity or happiness upon". The context is usually clear enough to know when this definition applies.

This old saying always seems to ring true:

' Happiness is not getting what you want, it is wanting what you get. '

Backed up by words of wisdom by the Rolling Stones:

' ...you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you just might find.....you get what you need. '

When it is all said and done, I believe that happiness is a matter of deciding what to be happy about. I know more than a few people who have decided that being unhappy is what makes them the happiest of all....

Happiness resides just around the corner, in a state of bliss.

Happiness to me is contentment. If one can be content with what they have, feel blessed that they are alive, and not worry about the worldly possessions of others, one can be happy. (of course you can say that contentment leads to stagnation, but oh well)

You also have to take into account that in this day and age, a lot of us ARE our jobs. Being happy in your work is very important. I don't think that is a problem with a lot of people here, but just thought it a good point to make. I was a chef for over 10 years, and absolutely despised it, leading to a miserable and sometimes meaningless feeling of existence. I chose to follow my dream, and although I make less money now, I am ultimately happier.

Personally, I find a level of happiness in my family's modest wealth. Although that might sound shallow its very comforting to know I do have a saftey net.

I guess for me to reach a true state of happiness, which I have not yet, I have to learn to accept that there will always be mean and angry people in this world. Though it makes no sense to me, I get very distressed at the actions of others who do not seem to appreciate the feelings and ideas of others. It may seem strange that the actions of others would actually cause unhappiness in someone, but I am rather apathetic, and sort of feel inside of me the anger and hatred that people feel towards strangers for no reason. Sometimes I think I will only find true happiness alone in a forest, but I feel it is my obligation, living in this modern society, to be right in the middle of the mess.

Anyway, true happiness for me is everyone getting along and accepting the various differences we all hold inside of ourselves as individuals. I think this would put a big perma-smile on my face. Besides that, the things that bring me happiness now, are of course, my son...who now crawls pretty well and is growing rather fast, my wife, and my family. And playing the guitar or reading.

Except when I actually AM one of those mean & angry people, then I'm just happy to be so good at being mean while I'm angry. After all, doing both of those well at the same time (mean & angry) is something many others can only master with years of practice.

InI, It is a very rare person indeed, who can taste the pleasure of others.
I did. not realise this was going to be a critique of peoples happiness.
Thanks for turning my mind towards Happiness I have just spent a half hour or so perusing the net for "Happiness/quotations/poetry" and it brought a smile to my ugly mush.
There are so many things that make me happy, off the "top of my head"
A bird singing
A flower blooming
A child laughing
Of course, happiness comes from within. Being the creatures we are, I'm convinced that sometimes we forget how to be happy.
