I searched the archive for a post I remember, I believe it was an answer from twItch on how to *increase* resolution without mucking it up too bad. I think the technique had to do with a bit of noise...

anyone know how to bump a digital photo, 72 dpi JPG, up to a 300 dpi TIFF for printing?

gracias

The poster has demanded we remove all his contributions, less he takes legal action.
We have done so.
Now Tyberius Prime expects him to start complaining that we removed his 'free speech' since this message will replace all of his posts, past and future.

It's really going to depend on the photo, you know? Does it have lots of detail, or is it mostly broad smooth areas? I don't know that there's any one sure-fire solution.

I'll tell you one thing tho - it's lots easier to go from 300DPI to 72 that 'tother way 'round!

Why doy you need 300? That's in amny cases a bogus resolution. It's what most people who don't know any better ask for for print, but really you can often times get away quite nicely with far less. Going from 72 > 150 or 200 is less of a stretch, and sometimes actually looks better.

try this: go from 72dpi to 144dpi, add a hint of unsharp mask, then up to 300
