The downside is that you're putting twice the number of lens elements in front of the shutter and consequently reducing the overall quality of your lens. You'll also lose a significant amount of speed depending on how strong the converter is. A 200mm f2.8 will effectively become a 400mm f5.6 with a 2x converter or about a 300mm f4 with a 1.4x. You're close focusing distance will also be increased.
