An unusual question, perhaps.

Before I went out and bought a set of Tiffen close up attachments for my lense, I used a regular 2x loupe to be able to focus closer. One lense. simple.

Is there a similar way to create a telephoto lens? That is, create the effect of magnification, but retain the focusing distances? Any help would be appreciated. I just do not have extra $200 for a new lens.

Most manufacturers make teleconverters. Usually in the 1.4x and 2x powers. The downside is that you're putting twice the number of lens elements in front of the shutter and consequently reducing the overall quality of your lens. You'll also lose a significant amount of speed depending on how strong the converter is. A 200mm f2.8 will effectively become a 400mm f5.6 with a 2x converter or about a 300mm f4 with a 1.4x. You're close focusing distance will also be increased. I recommend buying the best glass you can, even if you have to save for it, like me. Right now I have my eye on a 24mm with tilt/shift capability.
