Topic: sooo...who's shooting with what?

i'm looking into a digital camera and will actually be able to afford one sometime here in the near future. was just browing in here and was wondering what models folks in here were using (whether digital or film cams).

Digital: Sony DSC F-707. This has really taken over my photography, my traditional camera is basically just collecting dust now.

Traditional: Canon EOS Elan 7. I have a couple of nice lenses for it and that's the only reason I still have it, one day I may jump up and buy a digital SLR so I keep this camera and the lenses around just in case.

I have the Sony 707, too. I love it !

I have Sony DSC F-717. I bought it three days ago and can't stop playing with it. I think it's a great camera and so worth the money.

i'm shopping right now, looking at a couple $300-ish cams. the short list at the moment is the nikon coolpix 4300, canon powershot a70, and olympus c-740 ultra zoom. any personal experience or recommendations within these?

I recently bought a Fuji FinePix S304 DC (I think it's called FinePix 3080 in the US) and I love it to bitz. You have to get used to the shutter action delay (I think this is common to a lot of DC's) Ideally, as much as I like this model, I will be aiming at the higher end Digital SLR's.


I took this sunset a not long ago using the full zoom about 130mm I think. I have done no further twiddling with it in PS. Just so you can see what the camera is capable of in not so capable hands.

Fig: I got to play with a Canon A70 the other day and I have to admit I was impressed. I've been thinking of buying one for my girlfriend and have been looking in the same range. After using it, the A70 has definitely taken the lead.

Nikon Coolpix 4500 here. I say it's a fine camera but what would I know about cameras?! I've hardly shot it any of the auto modes but man when I finally get it just right it takes some grand photos. Only problem is microscopic dust particles showing up on macros and close ups, that was a shocker =)

Fig: you got any legacy lenses? Like from Nikon or Canon SLRs?
If not, the field is wide open. If yes, might want to make that part of the equation. I LOVE the Nikon D1x. Yeah, the decimal point is in different place than your target, but it does a GREAT job and plays nicely with our existing Nikon lenses. There are cameras from both Nikon and Canon that are priced at a more consumer point and still use the lenses you already have.

I'm also a huge fan of Compact Flash card memory. Give the memory media some thought. Compact Flash cards are reliable, reasonably priced, available in a variety of capacities and easily obtainable. How does the camera attach to the computer? Firewire just rocks on a Mac. There are also third party readers the cards fit into to avoid attaching the camera directly to the computer, but most of the time I use the Firewire port.

thanks for all the info guys. krets, i'll give the a70 a closer look, its gotten rave reviews everywhere i've looked so that's a plus.

steve, sure don't on the lenses so we're wide open, i shot in college on a pentax but didn't own it. i'm looking for something for use in both my design work and to have photo reference and grab textures for doing 3d, and i'd like something a bit more on the compact side at this point so i can keep it around with me on the go. i'd like 3 or 4mp and some solid manual controls, other than that i'm totally open to suggestion. i'm usb only on my pc at this point but plan to add a g5 to the arsenal in the spring if i can swing it any ideas/recommendations/etc. are greatly appreciated.

Canon EOS 10D. And the glass costs are eating me alive. I just can't resist more lenses. 100-400mm IS L should be in tomorrow. That's an effective 640mm on the long end.

Hey, Das, you got any complaints about the 10D? I've been eyeing that camera for a while, and if I snag this job I just quoted, I may be able to pick one up.

btw, jason, do you like the twisty shape of the 4500 or do you find that awkward at all? that's one i'd actually looked at a bit but i wasn't sure if the two rotating halves would get annoying after a period of time.

No complaints whatsoever. Hell of a camera.

A Canon AE-1 Program camera. One of the earlies electronic cameras and the grandfather to today's digitals.

I've got three cameras that I use for fun, nothing else.

- One Oympus Camedia 1.3 Mpx bought for webpics and instead of a pocketcamera
- One older Canon EOS model (I think it's called Rebel?) with a 50mm, 35-70mm and 100-300mm lenses. This one is for more serious pics.
Then last week I picked up an old (and I mean old) mid-format camera, A "Nettar Zeiss Ikon". It's 100% manual in all aspects and really fun to use.

My brother is a pro photographer so he's slowly introducing me to the "manual settings camera world" so I can use it properly.

actually felt the same about the twisty thing, but I love it now. You can take photos from the ground or on your tip toes and arms over your head, pretty sweet.
