There are rows of terraced houses side by side, back to back and where they meet at the back there is this path. They are known as "Jiggers" or "back jiggers" and are dark and smelly. They have been called that for over 100 years, reportedly becauseif while walking through one if you meet a person coming the other way, you both have to do a little "jig" to get past each other.
